Shopping automotive two post lifts gets confusing fast, and the ALI Gold label on the column is one of the few things on a spec sheet that means something concrete. A body shop foreman in Cedar Rapids called us in February with a specific problem: his insurance carrier had flagged two of his older lifts during a walkthrough, and he needed replacements that would satisfy both the inspector and his own conscience. What ALI Gold Certification Actually Certifies
The Automotive Lift Institute is a trade association that runs a third-party certification program administered through an accredited body. A lift carrying the gold ALI certification label has been independently tested against ANSI/ALI ALCTV, the American national standard for vehicle lift construction, testing, and validation. That testing covers structural capacity with margin, the mechanical load-holding devices, the hydraulic and electrical systems, the operator controls, the swing-arm restraints, and the completeness of the installation and operation manuals.
Two things trip people up. First, certification is model-specific and configuration-specific, not brand-wide. A manufacturer can have a certified 10,000 lb model and an uncertified 12,000 lb model sitting side by side in the same catalog. Second, the certification is ongoing — the certifying body does follow-up factory audits and periodic retesting, so a lift that was certified in 2009 under an old label isn’t automatically covered today. In collision work, a vehicle might sit up for days with panels off, doors open, and technicians leaning into openings while a hood or bumper cover hangs on a stand nearby. That argues for buying above the minimum capacity you calculate on paper.
For a shop working mostly cars, crossovers, and half-ton pickups, a 10,000 lb unit handles the realistic weight range with margin. Once you’re regularly seeing 3/4-ton and one-ton work trucks, cargo vans, or ambulances, step to 12,000 or 15,000 lb. We had a fleet customer call us not long ago who honestly didn’t know what he had — he was sure about the 10,000 lb units and “assuming” the rest were 14,000. That’s a real hazard. If you can’t state the rated capacity of every lift in your building from memory, get out there with a flashlight and read the data plates today. Automotive two post lifts also have a per-arm and front-to-rear load distribution rating printed in the manual, usually something like a 60/40 or 50/50 split. A lift rated 10,000 lb total may only allow 3,000 lb on a single arm. Load a heavy engine-forward diesel wrong on a symmetric setup and you can exceed an arm rating while sitting well under the total. Read that page of the manual once and post it in the bay.
Overhead vs. Baseplate in an Older Cedar Rapids Building
His building was a 1970s masonry shop with a low bar joist ceiling and about 11 feet 6 inches to the lowest obstruction over the bays. That killed most overhead-style two-posts, which typically need 12 to 13 feet of clear height for the crossbar and shutoff assembly. This is the most common reason we spec baseplate — sometimes called clearfloor or floorplate — models in older Iowa shops.
Baseplate designs run the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a low steel plate bridging the columns at floor level. You keep full overhead clearance, which also means you can raise a vehicle high enough to walk under with a roof rack or open the hood at full height. The tradeoff is the plate itself: you drive over it, floor jacks and creepers bump it, and it eventually collects grime. Most shops adapt within a week. The other consideration in a masonry building is column placement relative to walls and drains. We measured his bays at 13 feet on center, which is workable but tight for a body shop where technicians carry panels. Where we could, we moved the drive-in orientation so the power-unit column sat away from the traffic lane. Small layout decisions like that determine whether the crew uses a lift or avoids it.
Using a Two-Post for Seasonal Vehicle Storage
Here’s where we had to push back a little. He wanted to park customer classics and off-season vehicles up in the air over the winter to free floor space. Two-post lifts can hold a vehicle indefinitely on the mechanical locks — that’s what they’re designed to do — but they’re not the right long-term storage tool for a couple of reasons. The vehicle is supported at four pinch-weld or frame points rather than under the tires, so suspension hangs fully extended for months. And you cannot park a second vehicle underneath, because the arms and the load overhead make that space unusable in practice.
If storage is the actual goal, a four-post is the tool. The vehicle sits on its own tires on runways, the load path is far simpler, and you get a usable parking spot underneath. Mid-tier gets you real ALI certification, better arm and pad options, and a parts pipeline. For a production body shop, the math is straightforward. A bay that’s down costs you real revenue per day, and the price gap between tiers amortizes across a decade of use. Where we tell people to save is on features they won’t use: air and electric drops at the columns, drive-on ramps, and specialty adapters can all be added later. Add in freight, an install crew, anchors, any concrete work, and a load test, and plan for install to be a real line item rather than an afterthought.
