The Two Configurations We Compared for Him
Configuration A was a single 12,000 lb asymmetric two-post — a Rotary SPOA-series style clear-floor unit — set in the middle bay with a 4-inch reinforced slab pour under each column. Configuration B was a 14,000 lb four-post runway lift with a rolling bridge jack, sitting on the existing slab with no concrete work at all. Both were quoted new, both from brands we stock and service, and both were sized for the mix of half-ton pickups, three-quarter-ton diesels, and the occasional dually that make up about eighty percent of his ticket volume.
Up front, the four-post looked more expensive on the equipment line and cheaper on the installation line, because skipping a concrete cut and pour in an existing building saves real money and about a week of downtime. The two-post looked cheaper on equipment and more expensive to install. Over a single year those two paths land within a few hundred dollars of each other, which is exactly why so many shop owners flip a coin. But a car lift automotive decision is not a one-year decision. It’s a two-decade decision, and the twenty-year picture separates the two configurations by an amount that surprised him — and it wasn’t the direction he assumed going in.
Exhaust and Driveline Work Changes the Math
Here’s what tilted the comparison. His bread and butter is exhaust and driveline: cat-back replacements, flex-pipe repairs, muffler hangers rotted off by Iowa winters, carrier bearings, driveshaft U-joints, and rear differential seals. Every one of those jobs needs unobstructed access to the centerline of the vehicle from bumper to bumper. On a two-post, you have that. Nothing under the car but air. You can swing a torch, slide a full exhaust assembly out sideways, and drop a two-piece driveshaft without fighting a runway.
On a four-post, the runways sit under the tires — which means they sit directly under the frame rails on a body-on-frame pickup, and they’re right where you want to be when you’re cutting and welding pipe. Techs work around it. They get creative. But every job takes a few extra minutes, and a few extra minutes multiplied across twenty years of exhaust jobs is the single largest hidden cost in this entire comparison. We ran it conservatively: eight minutes of lost access time per exhaust or driveline job, four such jobs a week, fifty weeks a year. That’s roughly 265 hours a year of billable tech time evaporating into runway clearance. Over twenty years, at any honest shop labor rate, the four-post loses this comparison before you’ve spent a nickel on maintenance parts.
What Actually Wears Out Over Twenty Years
Now the parts side, because that’s where we live day to day. On a two-post, the consumables are predictable: lifting cables, arm restraint gears and pins, pad adapters, lock ladder springs, hydraulic hoses, cylinder seals, and eventually a power unit. Cables are the big one. On a hard-working shop lift in a salt-belt building, we typically see equalization cables needing replacement somewhere between year seven and year twelve, depending on how well the sheaves were kept clean and lubed. That’s a scheduled expense, not a catastrophe, and it’s a few hundred dollars in parts plus a service call.
On a four-post, cables also wear, and there are usually four of them running over eight or more sheaves, so the parts count is higher when that day comes. Add the rolling bridge jack, which is its own hydraulic system with its own cylinder, pump, seals, and pads. We get calls constantly about rolling jacks — one of the more common service requests we handle is a Challenger four-post rolling jack that won’t hold height along with a general lift level adjustment. Rolling jacks earn their keep, but they’re a second machine bolted onto your first machine, and a second machine means a second maintenance schedule. Over twenty years the four-post consumed noticeably more in parts and labor than the two-post in our comparison, which widened the gap that access time had already opened.
Concrete, Anchors, and the Cost You Pay Once
The two-post’s ugliest number is concrete. If your slab is thin, cracked, or under-reinforced, you’re cutting, digging, forming, pouring, and waiting for a proper cure before a single anchor goes in. In older Iowa buildings — and there are a lot of them around the Great Lakes area, some poured in the 1950s — we run into four-inch unreinforced slabs over questionable base all the time. Doing that right is not cheap, and we won’t install a two-post on concrete that can’t hold it. We’ve walked away from jobs over this.
But it’s a cost you pay once. A properly poured footing under a two-post column outlives the lift on it. We’ve replaced twenty-five-year-old lifts and reused the original footings after inspection. Meanwhile the four-post’s “no concrete work” advantage is real on day one and worth exactly nothing on day 3,000. It also comes with its own quiet cost: a four-post has to be re-leveled periodically, and if the slab it sits on settles unevenly, you’re shimming and adjusting for the life of the equipment. Where the Four-Post Wins, Honestly
We’re not anti-four-post, and we sell plenty of them. There are three scenarios where the four-post clearly wins the twenty-year comparison, and we tell customers so. First, if you store vehicles — stack a project car under a daily driver and the four-post pays for itself in floor space alone. Second, if your work is alignment-heavy. A four-post with alignment kits, slip plates, and turnplates is the right tool, and a two-post is not. Third, if your slab genuinely cannot be fixed at a reasonable cost, or you’re renting a building and can’t cut the floor.
There’s a fourth case that matters more than people admit: driving on is easier than setting arms. If your techs are hurried or inexperienced, a four-post is more forgiving. Nobody sets a pad on a rocker panel and crushes it. Nobody forgets to seat an arm restraint. That safety margin has real value, and it’s not on any spreadsheet. Certification, Inspection, and the Insurance Angle
Both configurations should be ALI-certified, full stop. We won’t quote a commercial shop on uncertified equipment, because a third-party-validated car lift automotive package is what your insurance carrier, your OSHA inspector, and your own liability exposure all quietly assume you have. ALI certification means the design, the load testing, the safety devices, and the labeling were all validated by an independent lab — not claimed in a catalog. How the Twenty-Year Numbers Landed
For that Great Lakes shop, the two-post won by a wide margin — and almost none of the margin came from the purchase price. It came from access time on exhaust and driveline work, a shorter parts list, and no rolling jack to maintain. The four-post’s install savings and drive-on convenience were real but couldn’t overcome roughly 5,000 hours of recovered tech access time across two decades. Your numbers may land somewhere else, and that’s the point. Run the comparison on your actual work mix, not on a generic spreadsheet. Count the jobs per week that need center access. Count the alignments. Look honestly at your slab. Ask whether you’ll be storing vehicles in five years.
