Picking a 2 post car lift for a municipal fleet shop is a different exercise than picking one for a hobby garage, and last winter a public works garage in northeast Iowa reminded us exactly why. They needed to pull plow gear off pickups in October, store two seasonal units on stands through spring, and still have a bay free for brake work on a one-ton. The buyer had three model numbers written on a legal pad and no idea which capacity rating actually matched the trucks in his yard. We drove up, measured the slab, measured the door header, and rewrote his list. That visit is the backbone of this walkthrough, because the specs he was comparing were the same specs everyone gets wrong.

Start With the Heaviest Vehicle, Not the Average One
The first question we ask every fleet manager is what the heaviest vehicle in the rotation weighs when it is loaded, not empty. The northeast Iowa garage told us six thousand pounds at first, which is what a half-ton pickup scales at. Then we walked the yard and found a three-quarter-ton with a service body, a salt spreader bed, and a full fuel tank. That truck was pushing nine thousand five hundred. A 10,000 lb rating with a nine-five vehicle on it leaves almost no margin for uneven arm loading, and uneven loading is normal on a work truck with weight biased to one side.
Capacity on a two-post is a total number split across four arms, and the manufacturer assumes reasonably balanced distribution. A dump bed or a utility body throws that assumption out. Our rule for fleet work is simple: take the heaviest loaded vehicle, add twenty percent, and buy the next rating up. For that garage it meant stepping from a 10,000 lb model to a 12,000 lb Rotary SPOA10 replacement in the higher tier, which cost more up front but ended the argument permanently. Nobody has ever called us to complain that their lift had too much capacity. We get the opposite call constantly, usually after somebody hears a groan they did not like.
Model Numbers Decoded: What SPO, SPOA, and CL Actually Tell You
Manufacturer model numbers are not random, and once you can read them the shopping gets much faster. On the Rotary side, SPO indicates a two-post overhead configuration and SPOA indicates the asymmetric version of that same family. The number that follows is capacity in thousands of pounds, so an SPOA10 is a 10,000 lb asymmetric overhead unit. A trailing letter or number often flags column height or extended-height variants, which matters enormously when your door header sits at 139 inches like one North Dakota shop we quoted last year.
Challenger uses CL for its clearfloor line, and the digits again map to capacity. A CL10 is a 10,000 lb clearfloor model, meaning the equalization runs through the floor instead of an overhead beam. That distinction is the single most important thing on the spec sheet for a fleet shop, because clearfloor gives you unlimited vertical room to raise a box truck or an ambulance without a crossbar in the way. Overhead models are usually cheaper and keep the floor completely clean, which the sweeper crews appreciate. When somebody sends us a model number with no other context, we can usually tell them within a minute whether that unit will physically fit their building — and about a third of the time, it will not.
Concrete Is the Spec Nobody Checks Until It Is Too Late
We have had customers tell us their slab is five inches thick, then core it and find three and a half with no rebar. Manufacturer install requirements for a 10,000 lb two-post typically call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least twenty-eight days, with the anchor pattern kept a safe distance from any joint, crack, or slab edge. Higher-capacity units want more. Those are not suggestions — ALI-certified lifts are only certified when installed to the printed spec, and an insurance adjuster will read that spec after an incident.
The northeast Iowa shop had a good slab in the front two bays and a thin apron poured decades later in the back. We put the lift in bay two. When the concrete is genuinely too thin, the fix is a cutout and pour: saw a pad roughly four feet by five feet under each column, dig down, tie in rebar, and pour to spec. It adds a few days and a modest cost, and it is dramatically cheaper than replacing a vehicle. We have also seen operators try to solve thin concrete with longer anchors, which does nothing useful. Anchor holding power comes from the mass of sound concrete around it, not from depth alone. If you are unsure what you have, core it before you buy anything.
Symmetric Versus Asymmetric for a Mixed Seasonal Fleet
Symmetric two-post designs put the columns directly across from each other with arms of equal length, and the vehicle sits centered between them. That geometry handles long wheelbase trucks and vans beautifully because the load is balanced front to rear. The tradeoff is door clearance — a centered vehicle means the driver door lines up close to the column, which is annoying on a car and irrelevant on a work truck you enter once.
Asymmetric designs rotate the columns and use shorter front arms, moving the vehicle rearward so doors swing clear. Great for a shop doing passenger cars all day. For a fleet garage handling plow trucks, mowers on trailers, and the occasional squad car, we usually recommend symmetric or one of the versatile hybrid units with expandable top beams and telescoping arms that cover both drive-thru widths. For a municipal shop we still lean toward a commercial Rotary or Challenger frame, because parts availability over a twenty-year service life matters more than the purchase price. Clearance Math: Ceiling, Header, and the Vehicle on Top
Rise plus vehicle height plus a safety margin has to fit under your lowest obstruction, and the lowest obstruction is rarely the ceiling. It is a door track, a gas heater, a sprinkler head, or a light fixture. The garage in northeast Iowa had a twelve-foot ceiling and a radiant tube heater running exactly where a column wanted to go. We moved the layout eighteen inches and everything worked.
For an overhead 2 post car lift, you need roughly the column height plus a few inches of clearance for the crossbar assembly, and that is typically twelve feet or more on a full-rise commercial unit. Baseplate and clearfloor models let you fit into a shorter building because nothing spans the top. We regularly install baseplate configurations under eleven-foot ceilings for residential and light-commercial buyers. Then check the other direction: how tall is the vehicle you are lifting, and how high do you actually need it? Storing a seasonal vehicle overhead needs full rise. Doing brake work needs chest height. Many fleet shops discover that a mid-height setting covers ninety percent of their work, which relaxes the ceiling requirement considerably. Measure everything before you order, and photograph the bay while you are at it — send us those photos and we will flag conflicts you did not notice.
The Safety Systems You Should Be Inspecting Monthly
Every two-post has mechanical locks that engage automatically at intervals as the carriage rises, and those locks — not the hydraulics — are what hold the vehicle. Hydraulic cylinders lift. Locks hold. If an operator has learned to ignore the audible click on the way up, or worse, if the lift is being lowered onto locks routinely instead of released cleanly, you have a habit problem that will eventually become an incident. We teach every fleet crew to raise past their working height, then lower onto the nearest lock before anyone goes underneath.
The other items on a monthly list are short: inspect equalization cables or chains for broken strands and proper tension, check arm restraint gears for wear and function, look for hydraulic weeping at fittings and the cylinder rod seal, verify the overhead shutoff bar or padded bumper still triggers, and confirm anchor bolts are torqued to spec with no spalling around the base plates. A Challenger unit we were called out to look at last spring had a running motor, full fluid, and no leak — and would not lift. The cause was a failed cylinder seal bypassing internally, invisible from outside. An annual ALI-certified inspection catches that class of problem. Budget Tiers and What You Actually Get
Buyers usually arrive with a number in mind. We hear four thousand for a light-duty unit with no install, five thousand for a home shop doing occasional maintenance, and ten thousand or more for a commercial 2 post car lift installed and certified. All three of those numbers describe real products, but they describe very different products. The low tier gets you an import baseplate unit, a capacity rating at the bottom of the range, thinner steel, and a parts pipeline that may involve waiting on a container.
The middle tier gets you a name-brand residential-grade unit — BendPak or Atlas on the home side — with decent fit and finish and reliable parts. The commercial tier gets you Rotary or Challenger, ALI Gold certification, heavier columns, better arm restraints, and a service network that will still have parts in twenty years. For a municipal fleet that will amortize the purchase across two decades of plow seasons, the commercial tier is the only one that makes financial sense.
