If you’re buying a car lift for a farm shop in central Iowa, the warranty paperwork matters more than it does almost anywhere else, and almost nobody reads it before the freight truck shows up. We take these calls every spring: a producer north of Ames has a 30×40 machine shed, a slab poured for grain carts, and a plan to stop crawling around on gravel doing oil changes on the pickups and the family cars. The equipment gets ordered, installed, and used hard for two years. Then a cylinder weeps, and the question becomes whether the manufacturer covers it, who pays the labor, and how long the part takes to arrive. Here’s the checklist we wish everybody ran first.

Item One: Know What the Three Warranty Tiers Actually Cover
Manufacturer warranties on lifting equipment almost always split into three separate coverage periods, and the headline number in the ad is the longest one. Structural steel — posts, runways, arms, carriages — commonly carries five years or more, sometimes lifetime on the weldment. Hydraulic components including the cylinder, power unit, motor, and pump typically get one to two years. Wear items get essentially nothing: cables, arm pads, slider blocks, lock dogs, hoses, and fittings are considered consumables and are excluded almost universally.
That structure makes sense once you see it, but it surprises people who read “5-year warranty” and assumed the whole machine. The failures that actually strand a farm shop are hydraulic and wear-item failures, which are the shortest-covered categories. When a producer near Nevada, Iowa called us about a leaking cylinder on a unit that was 26 months old, the steel had three years of coverage left and the cylinder had expired two months earlier. That’s not the manufacturer being difficult — it’s the tier structure working as written. So when you’re comparing two models at similar money, compare the hydraulic coverage period specifically, not the headline. A car lift with two years on hydraulics is meaningfully better than one with one year, even if both advertise five years on steel, and that difference is usually worth more than whatever cosmetic features are being sold alongside it.
Item Two: Ask Whether Labor Is Included — It Usually Isn’t
This is the single biggest gap between what buyers expect and what they get. Nearly every manufacturer warranty in this industry is parts-only. The cylinder ships free; the four hours to drain the system, unpin the cylinder, swap it, refill, bleed, and cycle-test comes out of your pocket. On a farm shop an hour outside a service center, add travel. We’ve seen parts-only claims where the free part was a fraction of the total cost of getting the machine running again.
Some manufacturers offer a labor allowance for the first 90 days or first year, and some dealers — including us on equipment we install — cover the labor on early failures because we’d rather keep a customer than win an argument. Ask both questions explicitly before you buy: does the manufacturer pay labor, and does the selling dealer? Get the answer in writing or in an email you can find later. If the seller is an online-only outfit shipping from a warehouse three states away, assume the answer is no labor and no local help, and price the ownership accordingly. A slightly higher purchase price from someone who will actually show up in central Iowa with a truck full of parts is the cheaper option about nine times out of ten.
Item Three: Confirm Installation Doesn’t Void Your Coverage
Self-installation is the great warranty landmine, and farm shops are where it happens most because there’s usually a skid loader, a welder, and a stubborn streak available. Many manufacturers require installation by a certified installer for full warranty coverage, and some require documented ALI-certified inspection. Others allow owner installation but exclude anything traceable to install error — which in practice means anchoring, leveling, plumbing, and lock synchronization, i.e. most of what goes wrong.
We got a call from a shop in Indiana that had installed a two-post themselves and could not get the carriages to level. They’d found us searching for lift repair, and when we walked through it over the phone the problem was cable routing at the equalizer sheave plus a slab that was out of level by more than the shim stack could correct. That’s not a warranty claim on any planet — that’s an install issue, and the manufacturer said so. If you’re going to install your own car lift, at minimum read the manual completely before you unbundle the pallet, verify your concrete thickness and cure, use the supplied anchors at the specified torque, and document everything with photos. Item Four: Match the Duty Cycle to Farm Shop Reality
Warranty language often includes a clause about intended use, and farm shops sometimes fall on the wrong side of it. Home-grade equipment is engineered and warranted for occasional use — a few cycles a week, personal vehicles. A working farm shop that services six pickups, two grain trucks, three family cars, and the neighbor’s combine service truck is not occasional use, even if it’s not technically commercial. If a manufacturer defines home use as under a certain number of cycles per year and you’re well past it, an adjuster can push back on a hydraulic claim.
Our practical advice: if the equipment will see daily or near-daily cycles, buy commercial-grade even for a private shop. The seals, the power unit duty rating, and the lock hardware are built for it, and the warranty language won’t fight you. For oil changes and fluid service specifically — which is what most farm shops actually want — a commercial two-post at 10,000 or 12,000 lb capacity is the right tool, because you get open floor access, no runways in the way of the drain pan, and enough capacity for a three-quarter-ton diesel. Item Five: Understand the Claim Workflow Before You Need It
A warranty claim has a sequence, and skipping steps is how claims get denied. First, you need the serial number and model off the data plate — photograph it the day the unit is installed and save it somewhere you’ll find it in five years, because the plate on a farm shop machine will be coated in dust, grease, and possibly bean chaff by then. Second, you need proof of purchase and install date. Third, you need a description of the failure and, in most cases, photos.
Then the part gets diagnosed — usually by a dealer or authorized servicer, which is another reason to buy from someone who can actually diagnose. The manufacturer issues an RMA or ships the replacement, sometimes requiring the failed part back. Lead times run from same-week for common seal kits and cables to several weeks for a specific cylinder on a discontinued model. Item Six: Check Parts Availability, Not Just Warranty Length
A twenty-year warranty on a brand that leaves the market in three years is worth nothing, and a two-year warranty on a brand with a nationwide parts channel is worth quite a lot. This is the item we push hardest on, because it’s the one that determines whether your equipment is repairable in year twelve. Before you buy, search for a specific replacement part for the exact model — a cylinder, a set of cables, a carriage lock assembly. If you can find it stocked by more than one distributor, good sign. If you can’t find it at all, that model becomes scrap the day something structural fails.
We service equipment installed in Iowa shops twenty and twenty-five years ago because the brands are still supported and the parts are still standard. We also get called to look at units that are eight years old and unrepairable because the importer folded and the bore, rod, and port dimensions on the cylinder don’t match anything current. Item Seven: Build Your Own Maintenance Record From Day One
Manufacturers can deny claims for lack of maintenance, and farm shops are the easiest place in the world to lose a maintenance record. Start a folder or a phone note the day the unit is commissioned. Log the install date and installer, the data plate photo, the anchor torque spec used, every fluid top-off, every cable adjustment, and every annual inspection with the date and who performed it. Fifteen minutes a year. That record is what turns “the cylinder failed” into a payable claim instead of an argument about whether the reservoir was ever checked.
Practical maintenance on a farm shop unit is short: check hydraulic fluid level quarterly, grease the slider blocks and cable sheaves per the manual, inspect cables for broken strands and corrosion twice a year, verify lock engagement audibly on every lift, and keep the runways or arms free of the fine grit that gets into everything out here.
