We took a call once from a shop with a sedan stuck in the air on a 7,000-pound four-post because the hydraulic cylinder had started weeping and the owner did not trust the descent. The right move in that situation is not to start prying at the locks — it is to set the mechanical safeties on the nearest lock position so the platform is resting on steel rather than fluid pressure, block the vehicle, tape off the bay, and call somebody who knows the model. Hydraulic pressure is what raises equipment; the lock ladder is what holds it. Understand which one is currently carrying your load before anyone puts a hand under it.
For a fleet shop, that means having a written lockout procedure posted at each bay and a designated person who makes the call. In a municipal setting your safety officer will want that anyway. Note the exact symptom while it is fresh: does it drift down overnight, does it stop three feet from the floor, does one column lag the other, is the leak at the rod seal or a fitting? Photograph it. What Manufacturer Coverage Typically Includes
Commercial-grade equipment from the major manufacturers usually carries a tiered warranty rather than a single number. Structural components — columns, carriages, arms, runways — commonly get the longest term, often five years or more. Hydraulic and mechanical components like cylinders, power units, and lock assemblies typically sit in a shorter window, frequently one to two years. Wear items — cables, rollers, slide blocks, seals, hoses, and anything considered a consumable — are usually excluded outright or covered only for a short initial period. Rotary and Challenger both publish their terms clearly, and the tiers differ by model line, so the coverage on a 12,000-pound two-post is not identical to the coverage on an inground.
What warranty covers is a defect in materials or workmanship. What it does not cover is normal wear, damage from misuse, corrosion from road salt and washdown, damage from lifting beyond rated capacity, or failures traced to improper installation or missed maintenance. That is not the manufacturer being difficult; a lift that is out of plumb loads its bearings sideways and destroys them.
The second silent killer is undocumented maintenance. If a claim gets reviewed, the manufacturer will ask for inspection records. No records means no way to show the failure was not caused by neglect, and claims get denied on exactly that basis. Third is unauthorized parts and repairs — swapping in a generic cylinder or a hardware-store cable, or having somebody weld on a structural member, will end coverage on the affected assembly and sometimes more. Fourth is overloading. We cannot count how many urgent calls start with “it is a four-post, seven thousand pounds, and it is black.” That is not enough to pull a part number, and the delay while we figure it out is time your bay is down. Third, document the failure with photos and a written symptom description. Fourth, contact your installing dealer, not the manufacturer directly — the dealer is who submits the claim and who has the relationship to expedite it.
From there the manufacturer either ships the part on the strength of the documentation or sends a technician to verify. Structural claims almost always get a site inspection; a leaking cylinder or a failed solenoid on a young unit often ships on photos alone. Ask two questions immediately: does the warranty cover labor or parts only, and can the part ship overnight. Many commercial warranties cover parts with labor covered only during a shorter initial period, so a five-year-old failure may mean a free cylinder and a paid install.
