So here’s the checklist we’d hand him, plus an honest look at how warranty coverage and claims actually work.

Check One: Measure the Slab Before You Look at a Single Model
Machine sheds and farm shops are where slab surprises live. A lot of rural Iowa buildings were poured for equipment storage, not for concentrated point loads, and the thickness varies wildly from one end of the building to the other. Most two-post lifts in the 10,000 lb class want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty want more. Four-post lifts spread the load better and are more forgiving, which is one reason we recommend them for a lot of farm applications.
Don’t guess. Core-drill or at minimum drill a test hole in the spot where a column would actually land. We’ve seen four inches at the door and two and a half inches thirty feet in where the pour ran thin. We’ve also seen slabs poured over fill that never got compacted, which passes a thickness check and still fails under an anchor. Check for control joints and cracks too — anchors need clean concrete a minimum distance from any edge or joint, and a column that lands on a seam is a column that will loosen. If the slab doesn’t meet spec, the fix is cutting out a section and pouring proper pads. It’s a real expense but it’s a one-time expense, and it’s cheaper than a lift that never anchors correctly. Do this check first, because it can eliminate half the models you were considering.
Check Two: Ceiling Height, Door Height, and What You Actually Lift
The second measurement people skip. A two-post overhead lift needs clearance for the crossbar above the tallest vehicle you’ll raise. If you’re planning on a grain truck or a dually with a topper, do the arithmetic honestly rather than optimistically. Farm shops often have generous ceiling height in the center and low soffits or lights near the walls, so measure at the exact bay location.
Then think about door height, because a lift that fits under your ceiling doesn’t help if you can’t drive the vehicle into the building. And be realistic about what you’re lifting most weeks. The east-central Iowa shop we mentioned thought he needed maximum capacity because of the grain truck, but the truck went in twice a year and the pickups went in weekly. He ended up with a 12,000 lb two-post for the daily work and kept using the shop’s overhead hoist and jack stands for the occasional heavy job. That was the right call for his money. If you genuinely need to raise medium-duty trucks regularly, a mobile column set is worth pricing — it goes where you need it, works on any adequate slab, and doesn’t commit one bay forever. A baseplate model is the other answer when ceiling height is the constraint on your hydraulic lift automotive plan.
Check Three: Match the Configuration to Suspension and Shock Work
Suspension work is the single most common reason a farm shop buys a lift, and it changes which configuration makes sense. If you’re pulling shocks, springs, control arms, and ball joints, you want the wheels hanging free. That points at a two-post, or a four-post with a rolling bridge jack that lets you pick the axle up off the runways.
A plain four-post is a fantastic storage and general-service lift, but with the tires sitting on the runways you can’t do a shock replacement without adding a jack. Budget for the bridge jack up front if you go that route; adding one later costs more and some are model-specific. On a two-post, pay attention to arm design. Asymmetric arms let you open car doors, which matters if the project car is part of the plan. Three-stage front arms reach short wheelbases and long-nose trucks alike. Screw pads with stackable adapters are worth every dollar on a farm — you’ll be lifting a lifted pickup one day and a low sedan the next. And check the truck adapter set is included, because on a lot of quotes it isn’t. We’ve had customers discover this the week the lift arrived, and the adapters showed up ten days later while a job sat.
Check Four: Read the Warranty Before You Read the Price
Warranty language on a hydraulic lift automotive purchase is where the difference between brands actually shows. The typical structure is a longer term on structural components — columns, arms, carriages — and a shorter one on the power unit, cylinders, hydraulic hoses, cables, and electrical. You’ll commonly see five years structural and one to two years on everything else, though the strong commercial brands go further.
Read three things specifically. First, is labor covered or parts only? Most warranties are parts-only, which means when a cylinder fails in month fourteen you get a free cylinder and a bill for the service call. Second, what voids it? Installation by an unqualified party, use of non-approved hydraulic fluid, missed annual inspections, and modifications all show up as exclusions. Third, is the warranty transferable if you sell the farm or the shop? Some are, most aren’t. We also tell people to check whether the manufacturer requires an ALI-certified inspection annually to keep coverage alive — a few do, and it’s a genuinely good practice regardless. The lowest-price unit on the internet frequently pairs with the thinnest warranty and no domestic parts support, and that combination shows up as a dead lift with a six-week parts lead time.
Check Five: Find Out Who Actually Handles the Claim
Here’s the part nobody explains at purchase time. When something fails, the claim workflow usually runs buyer to dealer to manufacturer, not buyer straight to manufacturer. If you bought from an online storefront with no service arm, you’re the one gathering serial numbers, taking photos, filling out forms, and waiting on a warehouse in another state. If you bought from an installing distributor, that’s our job.
The workflow we run looks like this. You call, we diagnose over the phone or on site, we pull the serial and model from the data plate, we document the failure with photos, and we submit to the manufacturer. Approved parts ship to us or directly to you, and we schedule the swap. The whole thing usually turns in days rather than weeks because we’ve got the relationships and we know what documentation each brand wants. We had a repeat customer whose lift wouldn’t go up or down with the pump bypassing — the operator was sure the lowering valve was stuck. We diagnosed it, got the power unit covered, and had it running before their week was blown. Keep your install paperwork, your serial numbers, and your annual inspection records in one folder. Check Six: Parts Availability and the Wear Items You’ll Actually Replace
Warranty covers defects. It does not cover wear, and wear items are what you’ll be buying. On a two-post, that’s the equalization cables, the arm restraint gears, the lock ladders, and eventually the cylinder seals. On a four-post, it’s the lift cables, the sheaves, and the slack safety mechanism.
Cables are the one to plan around. We got a call from an Orlando shop that ran a new cable and had it snap, with the hydraulics bypassing and the lift dropping slowly on top of it — two failures stacked, and both were maintenance items that got deferred. Cables stretch, they fray at the sheaves, and they need inspection and adjustment on a schedule. Before you buy, ask whether cables and seal kits for that specific model are stocked domestically. Check Seven: Install, Commissioning, and the First Year
Last item on the list, and the one that protects everything above it. Have the lift installed by someone who does it for a living. Anchor torque, shimming for plumb, cable equalization, bleeding the hydraulics, and setting the lowering speed are all steps where a shortcut shows up eighteen months later as uneven lifting or a leaking cylinder. Self-install voids some warranties outright and complicates every claim you’ll ever file, even where it’s technically permitted.
Commissioning matters too. A proper handover includes a full-travel cycle test, a load test, a walk-through of the safety locks, and instruction on the daily and monthly checks. Ask for the manual and the parts breakdown in paper, not just a PDF link that will be dead in three years. In the first year, watch the fluid level, listen for the pump changing pitch, and check the cables monthly.
