Find the Leak Before You Blame the Cylinder

The first thing we do on any leak call is clean everything. Degreaser, rags, compressed air, and a completely dry cylinder body, fittings, hose ends, and column base. Half the time the customer has already decided the cylinder is bad, and half of those turn out to be a weeping hose crimp or a loose JIC fitting that costs almost nothing to fix. Hydraulic oil travels down and sideways along steel, so a leak at the top of a two-post carriage can absolutely show up as a puddle two feet away from the column. If you skip the cleaning step, you are diagnosing a smear pattern instead of a leak.

Once it is dry, we cycle the lift under load and watch. A rod seal that has given up will show a fresh wet ring on the chrome as the rod extends, and it will get worse the higher you go because there is more oil column pressure behind it. A leaking gland nut usually seeps steadily right at the top of the barrel. A cracked weld or pitted barrel weeps from a spot that has nothing to do with the seal at all. Rod Seals, Wipers, and Why Chrome Condition Decides Everything

Most single-acting lift cylinders use a fairly simple stack: a rod seal to hold pressure, a wiper or dust seal to keep grit out, an O-ring and backup on the gland, and a bearing or bushing to keep the rod centered. When the wiper wears out, dirt gets dragged in on the rod, and that grit acts like sandpaper on the seal and the chrome. That is why a lift in a tire shop full of rubber dust and road salt fails years earlier than the same model in a clean dealership bay.

Before we order anything, we run a fingernail down the exposed rod. If the chrome is smooth, a seal kit will hold. If we can feel longitudinal scratches, pitting from moisture, or flaking chrome, new seals will chew themselves up in a matter of weeks. And how many hours a day does that bay actually make money? A shop running eight cars a day through one alignment bay is a very different economic case than a home garage four-post that lifts a project car twice a month.

Resealing wins when the cylinder is in good shape, the model is discontinued, or the cylinder is a big inground unit where pulling and shipping is the expensive part. Replacement wins when the barrel is scored, the rod is pitted, the ports are damaged, or the labor to pull, disassemble, hone, and reassemble approaches the cost of a new cylinder. On a lot of common Rotary and Challenger two-post applications, a replacement cylinder is close enough in price to a rebuild that we do not hesitate — you get new chrome, new seals, and a warranty instead of a gamble. Labor depends heavily on whether the lift is surface-mounted or inground.

The Leaks That Are Not Actually Leaks

Two things fool people constantly. The first is a lift that drifts down overnight with no visible oil anywhere. That is almost never a cylinder seal — internal cylinder bypass sends fluid back into the reservoir, not onto your floor. More often it is a leaking check valve or lowering valve in the power unit, or a velocity fuse holding partially open. We have replaced a lot of good cylinders for shops that chased the wrong part first.

The second is oil on top of the power unit or running down the column from the hose fitting. Overfilled reservoirs push oil out the breather every time the lift comes down, and it looks exactly like a serious leak by the end of a week. Check the fluid level with the lift fully lowered, and check it against the manual, not against a guess. Doing the Job Safely: Pressure, Support, and Sequence

Nobody should be loosening a hydraulic fitting on a loaded lift. Ever. The first step in any car lift hydraulic cylinder leaking repair is getting the lift fully lowered and empty, then supporting the carriages or runways mechanically — jack stands, cribbing, or the lift’s own mechanical locks with the weight resting on them — before a single fitting comes loose. Stored hydraulic pressure will move a carriage faster than you can get your hands clear.

From there the sequence is predictable: cap the hose to keep the reservoir from draining and the system from taking on air, disconnect the rod pin or clevis, unbolt the base, and lift the cylinder out with two people or a shop crane on anything with real weight. On two-post lifts, the equalization cables usually have to come loose or off entirely to free the carriage travel, and that means a full cable retension and lock synchronization check on reassembly. We treat that as part of the job, not an afterthought — a resealed cylinder in a lift with mismatched cables and out-of-sync locks is still an unsafe lift. Then bleed the system properly by cycling several full strokes and topping the reservoir.

Fluid, Contamination, and the Real Root Cause

A surprising share of the cylinders we pull failed because of the oil, not the seals. Water in the reservoir is the big one in Iowa, where an unheated shop sweats condensation into a vented tank through every temperature swing between October and April. Water rusts the rod, rusts the barrel bore, and turns clean hydraulic fluid into a milky mess that abrades everything it touches. Metal fines from a worn pump do the same thing more slowly.

So when we finish a cylinder job we flush the reservoir, replace the fluid with the correct grade — usually an AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, or ATF only where the manufacturer actually calls for it — and check the breather. If the oil coming out looks like coffee with cream, we tell the customer that flushing is not optional; otherwise the new seals inherit the same abrasive that killed the old ones.
