Start With the Slab, Not the Lift

Every install we’ve ever regretted started with a concrete assumption nobody verified. Before anything comes off the pallet, we want to know slab thickness, concrete strength, and cure age. A typical two-post asymmetric wants roughly four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and most heavier commercial units want six inches or more. Four-post drive-on models spread load differently but still need honest thickness under every runway post. If the pour is newer than about 28 days, we wait — green concrete won’t hold an anchor’s expansion force, and you’ll find out the hard way when a column shifts under load.

How do we check? We core drill or hammer-drill a test hole in the anchor zone and measure. It takes ten minutes and it has saved central Iowa customers thousands. We’ve run into post-tension cable in a newer residential slab, radiant heat tubing in a hobby shop near Boone, and a four-inch topping pour over old gravel in a building from the 1950s. Each of those changes the plan: sometimes we relocate the layout, sometimes we cut out a section and pour proper footing pads, and sometimes we recommend a different lift style entirely. A four-post storage lift that sits on the floor with lighter anchoring requirements is often the right answer in a marginal slab. That’s the whole point of reading a car lift installation guide before you drill — the slab dictates the equipment, not the other way around.

Measure Ceiling Height and Overhead Obstructions

The second killer is vertical clearance, and it bites residential jobs hardest. A two-post with an overhead crossbar needs the bar height plus the tallest vehicle you plan to raise, plus a couple inches of margin. Baseplate models move the crossover to the floor and buy you real headroom, which is why we spec them so often in attached garages with 9- or 10-foot ceilings. Four-post storage lifts stack two vehicles, so your math is car one, car two, runway thickness, and whatever is bolted to the ceiling.

And something is always bolted to the ceiling. Garage door tracks and openers are the usual suspects — we’ve relocated more openers than we can count, and side-mount jackshaft units solve it cleanly. Then there’s lighting, sprinkler heads in commercial buildings, HVAC trunk lines, and in older Iowa shops, exposed joists with cross-bracing right where a column wants to stand. We walk the bay with a tape and a laser before we commit to a layout. If clearance is tight, we’d rather tell you before the crate is opened than after. This is also where door swing, workbench depth, and walk-around space get decided; a lift you can’t get past on the driver’s side gets hated within a month. Layout, Column Placement, and Drilling Anchors

Once the slab and ceiling check out, we chalk the layout. Column spacing comes off the manufacturer’s drawing — not off a competitor’s install down the road, and not off what looked right on YouTube. We square the base plates diagonally, verify the distance at both ends, and confirm the approach side gives you room to open doors. On a two-post we also decide which side the power unit lives on based on where the wall outlet, air line, and existing benches sit.

Drilling is where discipline pays. We use the anchor manufacturer’s specified bit diameter and depth, blow the hole clean, and set wedge anchors to the torque spec with a calibrated wrench. Over-torquing spins the anchor and ruins the hole; under-torquing leaves the column free to walk. If we hit rebar, we shift slightly within the base plate’s slot pattern rather than forcing the bit through. Shims go under the base plate to plumb the column — steel shims, stacked no more than the manual allows, never wood or washers. We plumb both columns front-to-back and side-to-side, then re-torque after the first few cycles because shims settle. Anyone following a car lift installation guide should treat torque values as non-negotiable numbers, not suggestions.

Hydraulics, Air, and Electrical Hookup

With columns standing, we route hydraulics. Two-post lifts run a hose from the power unit cylinder to the slave cylinder, either overhead through the crossbar or through a floor trough. Floor-routed hose is the detail people underestimate — you either cut a shallow channel in the slab or use the manufacturer’s ramp cover, and skipping that step means a crushed hose within a year. We fill the reservoir with the specified fluid (usually AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, or ATF on some older units), then cycle the lift several times empty to purge air before any vehicle goes on it.

Electrical is a licensed-electrician item, and we say that plainly. Most single-phase power units want a dedicated 220V circuit sized to the motor; three-phase commercial units need correct rotation confirmed at startup, because a backward motor moves fluid nowhere and can damage the pump. Air lines feed the pneumatic lock release on two-posts and the lock system on many four-posts — shop air or a small dedicated compressor both work, but the line needs a drain and clean supply. We label the disconnect, verify the overhead limit switch on two-posts, and confirm the lowering valve returns fully. Skipping the air line and pulling locks by hand forever is a shortcut we’ve seen turn into a bent lock ladder.

Locks, Cables, and Safety Systems

The mechanical safeties are what stand between a vehicle and the floor, so we commission them deliberately. On a two-post, that means both lock ladders engaged at every position, audible clicks in sync, and the lock release cycling cleanly with air pressure applied. If one side clicks and the other doesn’t, the equalization cables are out of adjustment — not a nuisance, a real problem. We adjust cable tension so the carriages rise together and stay within the manufacturer’s allowable difference, then check again after loaded cycles.

On four-posts, we set cable tension the same way and verify the slack-cable safety trips when it should. Cables are consumables. We tell every customer to look at them twice a year for broken strands, kinks, corrosion at the sheaves, and flat spots. Sheaves themselves wear grooves and start eating cable, so they get inspected too. Arm restraints on two-posts must lock when the arm is loaded and release only when lowered — a worn restraint gear is one of the more common things we replace on used lifts people buy at auction. Load Testing and First-Day Commissioning

An install isn’t finished when the bolts are torqued. We run the lift through its full travel empty several more times, watching for uneven rise, hose rub points, and lock engagement at every notch. Then we put a real vehicle on it — usually the customer’s daily driver — and lift in stages, stopping to shake the vehicle at knee height to confirm it’s stable and properly centered on the pads. Center of gravity matters more than people expect, especially on trucks and mid-engine cars.

At full height we set the lift down on the locks and let it sit. Then we check for drift, look under the power unit for weeps, and re-torque anchors. When to DIY and When to Call Us

We’re not going to pretend nobody should touch a wrench. A capable homeowner with a good slab, a helper, an engine hoist or forklift, and patience can absolutely stand a four-post storage lift. Those units are largely bolt-together, don’t always require anchoring, and the manuals are decent. Where we push back is on two-post installs in questionable concrete, anything over about 12,000 lb capacity, three-phase power, inground lifts, and any building where the slab history is unknown. Those are the jobs where a mistake shows up months later as a leaning column or a cracked footing.
