It’s more common on older single-cylinder two-post lifts and on scissor and mid-rise lifts that rely entirely on hydraulic hold rather than mechanical locks for intermediate positions.
Test it by raising the lift to a working height, marking the position, and watching over several minutes with no load added or removed. Steady, slow settling with no visible external leak strongly suggests internal seal wear. A pinhole leak at a crimped hose fitting can bleed off enough pressure to let a loaded lift settle several inches over an hour without ever producing a visible puddle underneath.
Wipe every fitting clean, cycle the lift under load, and recheck after fifteen minutes. Any new wetness tells you exactly where the fluid is escaping. Fittings are inexpensive and simple to replace; a degraded hose is only slightly more involved. If either of these develops debris contamination or a worn seat, pressure bleeds back through the power unit even though everything upstream looks fine. This is a sneakier cause because it happens away from the cylinder itself, inside the power unit manifold, so a visual inspection of the lift structure won’t reveal it.
If you’ve ruled out the locks, the cylinder, and external leaks, and the lift still settles, the check valve is next. Don’t Overlook the Anchor Bolts and Concrete
