Why EV Service Bay Planning Starts With Weight

The single biggest factor in ev service bay planning is vehicle weight, and it’s the one most shops underestimate until they’re staring at a lift that can’t handle the load. A battery-electric truck or SUV can run several thousand pounds heavier than its gas equivalent, purely because of the battery pack. That extra mass isn’t just an issue for the lift’s rated capacity on paper — it changes how weight is distributed across the frame, which affects where your arms and pads need to sit.

We regularly see shops assume their existing 9,000 or 10,000 lb two-post lifts will cover them, and for lighter EVs they might. But once you’re dealing with full-size electric pickups or larger SUVs, you need to be looking at 12,000 lb and up, and in many cases a four-post or wider-stance two-post with reinforced arms works better than what’s already bolted to your floor. Battery Pack Location Changes Everything About Lift Points

High-voltage systems mean your techs need training beyond standard lift operation — proper lockout procedures, insulated tools, and awareness of orange high-voltage cabling before anything gets raised.
