When a two post or in-ground lift starts sagging under load, most shop owners jump straight to “the cylinder is bad” and order a new one. But hydraulic cylinder bypass troubleshooting is really about isolating whether oil is slipping past a worn piston seal inside the cylinder itself, or whether the real problem is somewhere else entirely in the hydraulic circuit. Start With the Symptom Pattern, Not the Part
The first thing we do during hydraulic cylinder bypass troubleshooting is figure out exactly how the lift is failing. Does it drift down slowly over ten or fifteen minutes with a vehicle on it, or does it drop fast the second you release the release valve? Slow, steady drift on a loaded lift points hard at internal bypass in the cylinder, meaning oil is leaking past the piston seal from the bottom chamber back up through itself. A fast drop, on the other hand, usually points to the check valve, the release valve seat, or a loose fitting letting oil bypass externally before it ever reaches the cylinder.
We also ask when the drift started and whether it’s gotten worse. A cylinder that suddenly won’t hold any load at all, versus one that’s been creeping a little more each month, tells two different stories. Sudden total failure often means a blown seal or a cracked cylinder wall. Gradual worsening is classic wear, and it’s the pattern we see most often on lifts that have been in service for many years without a seal kit replacement. Write down the pattern before you touch a wrench, because it saves an hour of guessing later.
Isolate the Cylinder From the Rest of the Circuit
The single most useful test in hydraulic cylinder bypass troubleshooting is closing the line to the cylinder and watching what happens. If you can shut off oil flow right at the cylinder inlet, either with an inline valve or by disconnecting the hose and capping it, and the ram still drops, the leak is internal to the cylinder itself and you’re looking at a seal or piston problem. If sealing off the line stops the drop, the fault is upstream in the power unit, the check valve, or the hoses, and the cylinder is fine.
This single test eliminates half the guesswork on most service calls. We’ve walked into shops where a tech had already pulled a cylinder for rebuild before realizing the actual leak was a worn check valve on the pump manifold. If you don’t have a way to isolate the line safely, at minimum watch the fluid level in the reservoir over a week of normal use. A reservoir that keeps dropping without visible fluid on the floor usually means oil is bypassing internally and being redistributed within the system rather than actually leaking out.
Check the Cylinder for External Leaks First
Before assuming internal bypass, rule out the obvious. Wipe the cylinder rod, the base, and every fitting completely dry, then cycle the lift through a full raise and lower with a load on it. Recheck every surface. A wet rod seal, a seeping base weld, or a loose hose fitting will show up immediately and has nothing to do with internal piston bypass. We see this more than people expect, especially on lifts that have sat outside or in a humid shop where corrosion has worked its way into a fitting thread.
If everything stays dry externally but the lift still drifts down under load, that confirms the bypass is happening inside the cylinder barrel, past the piston seal, and no amount of tightening fittings is going to fix it. At that point you’re choosing between a seal kit rebuild and a full cylinder replacement, and that decision usually comes down to the cylinder’s age, whether the bore is scored, and how much labor time you want to invest versus just swapping in a fresh unit.
Don’t Overlook the Check Valve and Release Valve
A huge share of what looks like cylinder bypass is actually a check valve that’s no longer seating properly, letting oil flow backward out of the cylinder and into the reservoir through the power unit. Debris, a worn ball seat, or a weak spring in that valve will produce symptoms nearly identical to a bad piston seal. The same goes for the manual release valve on the power unit; if it isn’t fully seating when closed, it bleeds pressure exactly like an internal cylinder leak would.
These parts are cheap compared to a cylinder and take a fraction of the time to replace. We always tell techs doing hydraulic cylinder bypass troubleshooting to pull and inspect the check valve before pulling the cylinder. If you’ve got a bench or a spare power unit, you can bench test the valve in isolation. A valve that holds pressure on the bench but the lift still drops confirms the issue is in the cylinder, and now you’ve spent an hour instead of a full day chasing the wrong part.
Piston Seal Wear Versus Bore Damage
Once you’ve confirmed the leak is inside the cylinder, the next question is whether a seal kit will fix it or whether the bore itself is scored. A worn piston seal on an otherwise healthy bore is a straightforward rebuild: honed bore, fresh seals, reassemble, done. But if the bore has scratches, pitting, or corrosion, especially near the bottom where the seal sits at full extension, a new seal kit will fail again within weeks because it’s riding over damaged metal.
Pull the piston and run a fingernail across the bore surface. Any catch or roughness means the bore needs honing or the cylinder needs replacing outright. This is where a lot of shops waste money doing repeat rebuilds on a cylinder that should’ve been replaced the first time. If you’ve been through two seal kits on the same cylinder in under a year, stop rebuilding it and replace it. Fluid Contamination Accelerates Every Failure Mode
Dirty or wrong-viscosity hydraulic fluid is behind more premature cylinder failures than any other single cause we see across Iowa shops. Metal shavings, dirt, and moisture in the reservoir get pulled directly into the cylinder bore every cycle, scoring the seal and the bore surface over time. If your fluid looks dark, smells burnt, or hasn’t been changed since the lift was installed, that’s very likely contributing to whatever bypass you’re troubleshooting right now.
Drain and replace the fluid any time you’re doing cylinder work, and flush the reservoir while you’re in there. Cheap fluid or the wrong ISO grade for your climate also causes issues, particularly in unheated Iowa shops where winter temperatures thicken the wrong fluid enough to starve the pump and stress every seal in the system. Getting the fluid right doesn’t just fix today’s problem, it buys you years of extra life on whatever cylinder or seal kit you install next.
