Most two-post lifts in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range run on a 220-volt single-phase circuit, typically 20 to 30 amps depending on the motor size, and that circuit needs to be dedicated — not shared with a welder, compressor, or lighting circuit. Four-post lifts and heavier commercial units can call for 30-amp service or three-phase power if that’s what the facility already runs. Home garage lifts from BendPak or Atlas are usually the easiest, often running on a standard 220-volt outlet already common in residential garages built for welders or dryers.

What we check every time: panel capacity for an additional breaker, wire gauge rated for the amperage over the actual run length from panel to lift, and whether the shop is on single-phase or three-phase service. Voltage drop over a long run is a real issue in older Iowa buildings with the panel on one end and the bay on the other — we’ve seen runs that technically had enough amperage on paper but dropped too much voltage by the time it reached the lift. That’s why we always recommend an electrician pull the exact wire gauge to spec rather than reusing whatever’s already run to that wall.

Shop Air: Sizing the Compressor Correctly

Air-assisted lifts need a steady, reliable air supply to release the locking mechanism on the way down — this isn’t optional, and a compressor that can’t hold pressure will leave technicians fighting a lift that won’t lower cleanly. We generally want to see a compressor rated for continuous duty, not just short bursts for impact guns, especially in multi-bay shops running several lifts and other air tools off the same line.

Line size and routing matter as much as the compressor tank itself. A long run of undersized copper or rubber hose from the compressor to the lift will cause pressure drop right when you need it most, mid-lower with a vehicle in the air. We typically recommend hard-piped air lines with a drop at each bay, sized to handle simultaneous demand from lifts, tire machines, and hand tools without one starving the others. If your shop is still running a single small pancake compressor for a two-bay setup with lifts planned, that’s usually the first thing we flag on a quote.

Panel Capacity and Breaker Availability

We ask for a photo of your panel before almost every commercial lift quote, because an open breaker slot doesn’t always mean available capacity. A panel can be physically full of open slots but still maxed out on total amperage once you add up everything already running — HVAC, lighting, existing equipment, and now a lift motor. Adding a lift to an already-loaded panel can trip breakers intermittently, which is a frustrating, hard-to-diagnose problem months after install rather than a clean fix on day one.

For shops planning multiple lifts, whether that’s a two-bay expansion or a full commercial buildout, we recommend sizing the panel for the eventual total load, not just the first lift going in. It’s far cheaper to upsize a panel or subpanel once during a remodel than to redo electrical work later when lift number two shows up. This is one of the most common gaps we see when a shop grows faster than its original electrical plan anticipated.

Three-Phase vs Single-Phase: What Iowa Shops Actually Have

Rural and small-town Iowa shops are more likely to have single-phase service, while shops in industrial parks or larger commercial buildings often have three-phase available. This matters because some heavier commercial lifts, especially Rotary and Challenger models in higher capacity ranges, are built around three-phase motors for smoother, more efficient operation. If your building only has single-phase service, that doesn’t rule out those lifts, but it may mean a phase converter or a different motor configuration, and that’s a conversation worth having before you fall in love with a specific model.

Coordinating Trades Before Install Day
