Every lift install site prep checklist we send starts with the same message: the equipment can’t fix a bay that isn’t ready for it. A two-post lift puts enormous point loads through the anchor bolts into the slab, and a mobile column lift needs flat, level floor for every column to travel evenly. If we show up and the slab is cracked, too thin, or the wrong age of concrete, we’re not installing that day — we’re rescheduling, and that costs you shop time and us a wasted trip.

Slab Thickness and Condition
Concrete is the first item on any real lift install site prep checklist, and it’s the one shops most often get wrong. Most two-post and four-post lifts need at least four inches of properly cured concrete, and heavier commercial lifts or those rated 12,000 lbs and up often call for more. We’ve walked into bays with beautiful-looking floors that were actually a thin overlay poured over old, cracked slab — and that overlay will not hold an anchor bolt under load.
Age matters too. Concrete needs to cure for close to a month before it’s ready to accept anchors reliably, and shops pouring a new bay specifically for a lift sometimes call us before that cure time is up. We’ll also check for expansion joints, rebar mesh too close to the surface, and any radiant heat lines, since anchor holes drilled into the wrong spot can hit tubing you really don’t want to puncture. Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance
Overhead clearance is the second thing every lift install site prep checklist has to confirm, because it’s the item people misjudge most often. A two-post lift needs enough height for the vehicle plus the lift’s rise, plus a safety margin, and shops with lighting, ductwork, or garage door tracks hanging low sometimes discover the conflict only after the columns are bolted down. We measure from the finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction, not just the ceiling itself.
Four-post and scissor lifts have their own clearance math since a full-rise platform lift plus a raised vehicle can get tall fast. Mobile column lifts sidestep some of this since there’s no fixed overhead structure, but even those need enough vertical room for a lifted truck or bus with a raised platform. Any thorough lift install site prep checklist accounts for the tallest vehicle you’ll actually service, not just the average one, because retrofitting ceiling height after the fact is far more expensive than measuring twice up front.
Electrical and Power Requirements
Power is a recurring surprise item on our lift install site prep checklist because most lifts need a dedicated circuit, and older Iowa shop buildings frequently don’t have one sitting near the bay. Hydraulic power units typically run on 220V single phase, though some commercial setups call for three phase, and running new wire from the panel can add real time to an install if it isn’t done ahead of us arriving.
We ask customers to confirm panel capacity, circuit type, and the distance from the panel to the lift location before we schedule. If an electrician needs to run conduit, that should happen before install day, not during it — our crew installs and calibrates lifts, we don’t want to be the ones holding up your morning waiting on a licensed electrician. Floor Space and Column Spacing
Column spacing and drive-through room are easy to overlook until the lift is halfway assembled. A two-post lift needs enough width between columns for your widest vehicle’s doors to open fully, and enough depth in the bay for the vehicle to pull all the way through or maneuver into position without clipping a wall or tool cabinet. Four-post lifts and mobile column setups need similar attention, especially in shops running multiple bays close together, since adjacent lifts can’t overlap swing radius or drive aisles. We’ve had to shift planned lift locations by a couple feet more than once because a tool chest or parts washer was going to end up in the way. Catching that during the checklist stage, on paper, is a lot cheaper than moving equipment on install day.
Utilities, Drains, and Obstructions Below Grade
Below-grade obstructions are the trickiest item on any lift install site prep checklist because you can’t see them just by looking at the floor. Before we drill anchor holes, we ask whether the shop has drawings showing plumbing, floor drains, in-floor heat lines, or electrical conduit running under the planned lift footprint. In-ground lifts obviously require the most scrutiny here, but even surface-mounted two-post lifts can have anchor bolts land right on top of a buried pipe if nobody checked first.
Older Iowa buildings that have changed hands a few times sometimes don’t have reliable as-built drawings, and in those cases we recommend a locate service or at minimum a careful inspection with a scanner before drilling. This step rarely gets skipped intentionally — it just gets forgotten because it’s invisible. Building it into the checklist up front keeps it from becoming a surprise mid-install.
Access, Lighting, and Getting Equipment Into the Bay
