What a Safety Cam Actually Is
On a two-post lift, each carriage rides inside a steel column. Welded or bolted to the inside of that column is a ladder of steel lock positions — usually notches, teeth, or slotted plates spaced every few inches. The safety cam (also called the latch, dog, or pawl depending on who built the lift) is the spring-loaded steel hook mounted on the carriage that drops into those positions. When you hear that steady clack-clack-clack as the lift rises, that’s the cam skipping over each notch and dropping back in behind it. Gravity and spring pressure do the work, not hydraulics.
That distinction matters more than anything else in this 2 post lift safety cam guide. The hydraulic cylinder lifts the vehicle. The cam holds it. If a hose bursts, a seal weeps overnight, or somebody bumps the lowering valve, the cam is the only mechanical thing standing between a 6,000-pound pickup and the concrete. That’s why a properly designed cam is a solid piece of steel with a load path straight back into the column, and why we get twitchy when we see one that’s been ground down, welded on, or held in place with a hardware-store bolt because the original pin walked out. A cam is not a wear item you improvise. It’s structure.
How the Lock Release Cable Ties Both Columns Together
Both cams need to release at the same instant, or the lift comes down crooked and the carriage binds in the column. Manufacturers solve that with a single lock release cable — a thin steel cable running from the powerside handle or air cylinder, over the crossbar or through the overhead, to the offside latch. When you pull the handle or hit the air valve, that cable rotates both cams out of the notches simultaneously and the lift free-falls onto the lowering valve’s control.
Almost every “my lift won’t lower” call we take in central Iowa is that cable, not the cams themselves. The cable stretches over years. Somebody adjusts the clevis to compensate, then adjusts it again, until the offside latch is barely clearing the notch. Then a cold morning stiffens the grease, the latch drags, and one side stays locked while the other releases. You feel it as a shudder or a clunk. Air-release lifts have their own version of this problem: a leaking air cylinder or a cracked line means one cam gets full pressure and the other gets a whisper. Why Cams Fail — The Four Causes We See Most
First: dry pivots. The cam rotates on a pin, and that pin needs grease. Ninety percent of sluggish latches we service in Iowa shops are simply dry and packed with brake dust. Second: broken or stretched return springs. When the spring loses tension, the cam doesn’t snap back into the notch fast enough, so it engages shallow — or skips a position entirely. Third: mechanical damage from the lift being lowered onto a jack stand, a transmission jack, or a creeper that never got moved. That impact loads the cam sideways and can bend the pin.
Fourth, and the ugliest: corrosion. This one is regional. Iowa road salt gets carried into the shop on every undercarriage from November through April, drips down the column, and sits at the bottom of the lock channel where nobody looks. We’ve pulled cams out of ten-year-old lifts in Des Moines-area shops where the pivot bore had rusted oval and the latch had a quarter inch of slop in it. A cam with slop engages at an angle, which concentrates the entire load on one corner of one tooth. That’s how a lock position gets deformed, and once the column notch is damaged, you’re no longer replacing a fifty-dollar part — you’re having a conversation about the column. The Daily and Monthly Inspection Routine
Daily takes ten seconds and doesn’t require tools. Raise the empty lift a few feet and listen. You should hear two distinct, evenly spaced sets of clicks — one per column — and they should be crisp. A mushy or intermittent click on one side means that cam isn’t fully seating. Then lower onto the locks and watch the carriages. They should settle at the same height. If one drops noticeably lower before it catches, that side is engaging a position late.
Monthly is more involved and it’s where this 2 post lift safety cam guide gets specific. Pull the covers or reach through the access opening on each column with a flashlight. You’re looking for four things: grease at the pivot, spring intact and under tension, no visible cracks or gouges on the cam face, and clean lock channels free of debris. Wipe the channel out. Grease the pivot with a light lithium grease, not chassis grease — heavy grease turns to glue in an unheated Iowa shop in January. Then do a loaded test. Put a vehicle on it, raise it, set it on the locks, and confirm both sides hold without creep over a few minutes. Adjusting the Lock Release Without Making It Worse
Adjustment is where good intentions turn into problems. The correct sequence is always: verify both cams move freely by hand first, then adjust the cable. If you tighten the cable to overcome a sticky latch, you’ve now got a cable holding a cam partially out of engagement at rest. That’s the setup for a lift that seems fine until the day it doesn’t.
On most manual-release two-post lifts, the adjustment is a threaded rod and jam nut at the offside latch arm. You want just enough slack that the cam sits fully home with the handle released, and just enough travel that both cams clear when the handle is pulled to its stop. That’s a narrower window than people expect — often less than a quarter inch of thread. Air-release lifts get adjusted at the cylinder rod instead, and you also need to confirm the air cylinder returns fully when pressure drops. We recommend documenting the setting once you get it right, because the next person who touches it will otherwise guess. And if the cable itself is frayed anywhere along its length, don’t adjust it — replace it. A lock release cable is one of the cheapest parts on the whole lift and one of the most consequential.
When to Repair and When to Replace
Cams, pins, springs, and release cables are all serviceable parts, and on Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas columns we can usually source them by serial number and have them shipped in a few days. A full lock rebuild on a two-post is a half-day job for a tech who’s done it before, and it costs a small fraction of a new lift. That’s almost always the right call on a lift with sound columns and a healthy cylinder.
Where we draw the line is column damage. If the lock positions themselves are deformed, elongated, or cracked, no cam replacement fixes that — the notch is the other half of the joint. Same story if the carriage slide blocks are worn enough that the cam can’t present squarely to the notch. At that point we’ll talk honestly about whether it’s worth chasing.
