An EV specialty shop owner in Iowa City called us with a question we get more often every year: can he even use a 2 post car lift on battery-electric vehicles, or does everything have to go on a four-post or a full-frame scissor? He’d been told by a supplier at a trade show that two-post lifting was “basically obsolete for EVs” and that any warranty claim on a lift used for electric vehicles would be denied. Both of those claims are wrong, and the second one is the kind of wrong that costs a shop real money in equipment they didn’t need. He was doing rear differential and reduction-gear fluid service on high-mileage EVs, work that practically demands open wheel access. Here’s what’s actually true.

Myth One: EVs Are Too Heavy for Two Posts

This is the myth that sells the most unnecessary equipment. Yes, electric vehicles are heavier than their gas equivalents — a mid-size electric crossover can run 5,000 to 5,800 pounds, and the big electric pickups push past 8,000. But two-post lifts are rated well above that. A 12,000 lb unit lifts an electric pickup with substantial margin. A 10,000 lb unit handles every electric sedan and crossover on the road today without breaking a sweat.

What actually changes with EVs isn’t total weight, it’s weight distribution and lift point location. The battery pack sits in the floor between the axles, which means the center of gravity is lower and further rearward than you’re used to, and the load on each arm is more evenly split. That’s mechanically favorable for a two-post. The real constraint is that many EVs have designated lift points on subframe or pack-perimeter reinforcements rather than traditional pinch welds, and those points sit at different heights. That’s an adapter problem, not a capacity problem. Drop-end arms with telescoping screw pads and a good stack-adapter set solve it. We’ve helped shops in eastern Iowa spec exactly this configuration, and the lifts they bought are the same lifts we’d sell a conventional independent shop.

Myth Two: Using a Two-Post on EVs Voids the Warranty

Flatly false, and it’s worth being precise about why. Lift manufacturer warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship. They’re voided by things like exceeding the rated capacity, installing on inadequate concrete, unauthorized modification, skipping required maintenance, or using non-OEM structural parts. Nowhere in any two-post warranty we’ve read — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas — does the powertrain type of the vehicle appear as an exclusion. The lift doesn’t know or care whether there’s a battery pack or an inline six over the front axle.

What people are probably half-remembering is the vehicle manufacturer’s side of the equation. Some EV service manuals specify lift-point locations and warn that lifting on the battery enclosure can damage the pack, and damaging a pack absolutely can create a vehicle warranty dispute. That’s a technician-training issue and it’s a legitimate concern — but it’s an argument for reading the service manual and buying the right adapters, not for abandoning the 2 post car lift as a category. If anything, the open-center design of a two-post makes it easier to see and reach correct lift points than a runway lift where the deck hides everything. Get the lift-point diagrams for the models you service, print them, and hang them in the bay.

What Two-Post Warranties Actually Cover

Typical coverage on commercial-grade equipment runs five years on structural components, two years on the power unit, and one year on hydraulic and wear items — cylinders, cables, hoses, seals, and electrical. Entry-tier lifts often run shorter across the board, sometimes a single year on everything. That spread is a bigger factor in total cost than most buyers realize, and it’s one of the reasons we push shops doing daily volume toward the commercial tier.

Read what’s excluded, too. Cables are frequently classed as wear items, which is reasonable — they’re consumables with a service life measured in cycles. Pads and arm-restraint gears wear out and generally aren’t covered. Freight damage is a carrier claim, not a warranty claim, which is exactly why you inspect and photograph the columns on the dock before you sign the bill of lading. Cosmetic corrosion usually isn’t covered, and neither is any failure downstream of an installation that didn’t follow the anchor spec. That last one matters: if you install a 2 post car lift yourself on a slab you never tested and a column shifts, the manufacturer will ask for concrete documentation and you won’t have any. We’ve seen that conversation go badly more than once.

Myth Three: You Need a Special “EV Lift”

There’s a growing category of equipment marketed specifically for electric vehicles, and some of it is genuinely useful — battery-pack lifting tables, high-capacity mid-rise scissors for pack drops, insulated tool sets. But the two-post in your bay is not obsolete, and “EV-rated” on a spec sheet is frequently a marketing sticker on the same steel.

Here’s how we’d actually equip an EV specialty shop doing differential and reduction-gear fluid work, brake service, suspension, and tires. It gives wheels-free access, technicians can stand upright under the drivetrain, and a fluid extraction rig rolls right under. Second bay: a four-post with a rolling bridge jack for alignment and long-term storage of customer vehicles waiting on parts. Third, if pack service is on the roadmap: a low-profile pack table, which is a different tool entirely and doesn’t replace either lift. That’s a real shop, not a catalog. The Iowa City owner who called us ended up with exactly that layout, and his equipment budget came in below what the trade-show pitch would have cost him for a single “EV-specific” platform.

The Claim Workflow, Step by Step

When something does fail, the process is not mysterious, but it rewards preparation. Step one: stop using the lift and tag it out. Step two: pull your serial number off the column data plate and your original invoice. Myth Four: Baseplate vs. Overhead Doesn’t Matter

It matters, and for EV shops it matters in a specific way. An overhead configuration runs the equalizer cables and hoses through a top beam, which keeps the floor completely clear — great for rolling a fluid cart or a transmission jack straight through. But it eats ceiling height, and the overhead beam with its safety shutoff bar needs real clearance above the tallest vehicle you’ll lift fully.

A baseplate design runs everything through a low channel across the floor. You lose the clean drive-through, and you’ll trip over that channel until you learn it’s there, but you gain every inch of vertical space. We’ve had customers with a hard ceiling limit around 139 inches who had no realistic choice but baseplate, and that’s a common situation in older Iowa buildings with trusses, ductwork, or a mezzanine in the way. Electric SUVs and pickups are tall, and once you add the height you need to get the wheels comfortably above waist level for suspension work, overhead clearance disappears fast. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak of the roof. Then decide. Getting the Spec Right the First Time

Concrete depth, verified by core sample, not by memory or by what the previous tenant said. Bay width and door opening. Whether you have a forklift for unloading. Which specific EV models you service, so we can check their lift-point geometry against the arm and adapter options.
