He didn’t buy the lift to do frame work or transmission swaps. He bought it so oil changes, differential service, brake fluid flushes, and coolant exchanges stopped being an all-afternoon fight with jack stands on a cold slab. Why a Collector Chooses Two Posts Over Four
The first conversation we had with this customer was actually about a four-post. He’d been reading forums, and the storage-stacking argument is a strong one when you own five cars and a two-and-a-half-stall garage. But when we asked what he’d actually be doing under the vehicles, the answer settled it fast: oil and filter changes, transmission drain-and-fills, rear diff service, brake bleeds, and the occasional exhaust hanger. Every one of those jobs is easier with the wheels hanging free and nothing between you and the drain plug. A four-post runway sits right where you want to stand for a filter change on an inline six.
There’s also the honest math on frequency. He services vehicles maybe fifteen to twenty times a year across the fleet. Storage stacking would have earned him one extra parking spot but cost him convenience on every single service. So we spec’d a 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post, which handles everything in his collection with a huge margin — his heaviest vehicle is a mid-70s land yacht that scales somewhere near 4,800 lb. Capacity was never the constraint. Arm reach and pad height were. The Site Check: Ceiling, Concrete, and the Garage Door Track
We drove out with a tape measure, a rotary hammer for a test hole, and a laser. Ceiling measured just under 12 feet to the bottom of the trusses, which is comfortable for a clearfloor overhead model but not generous. The bigger issue was the garage door track — a standard residential torsion setup that hung down about ten inches across the full opening. That track determines your usable height far more than the ceiling does when the lift sits near the door.
Concrete came back at a hair over five inches of reasonably clean pour, no rebar in the test spot but decent aggregate and no crumbling. That’s workable for a residential-duty two-post as long as the anchors land in solid material and the slab has enough edge distance. We’ve walked away from jobs where a test hole showed three inches over gravel, and we’ll tell you straight if that’s what we find — pouring a pad section is cheaper than replacing a car. In this case we set the columns fourteen feet back from the door opening, which put the lifted vehicle’s roof well clear of the track and gave him room to walk a parts cart around the front. That single positioning decision did more for daily usability than anything else on the install, and it cost nothing extra to get right the first time. Laying Out the Bay Around the Lift, Not the Other Way Around
Most people place the columns first and then figure out where the toolbox goes. We push customers to do it backwards. Draw the vehicle at full height, draw the drain pan under it, draw where you stand, and then figure out where the posts can live without you sidestepping around them forty times an hour.
For this Marion garage, the workflow was oil-service-first. That means a drain pan cart needs to roll straight in from the front, a filter and rag station needs to be within arm’s reach at chest height when the car is up, and used oil needs a home that isn’t across the room. We ended up with the toolbox on the driver-side column wall, a wall-mount reel for compressed air over the passenger column, and a rolling drain caddy that parks between the posts when the bay is empty. Lighting was the last piece and the one he was most glad we pushed — two 4-foot LED strips mounted parallel to the runway path, offset outboard of the columns so the raised vehicle doesn’t shadow its own underside. A single center-mounted fixture would have put him in the dark exactly where he works. Total lighting cost was trivial next to the lift, and he mentions it every time we talk. Good bay layout is mostly about not fighting your own equipment.
Install Day and the First Lift
Install on a residential two-post typically runs most of a day for our crew, and this one was no exception. Columns get set and plumbed, the overhead beam goes on, anchors get drilled and torqued to the manufacturer’s spec, the power unit is mounted and wired, hydraulic lines are routed and bled, and cables get equalized. Then we cycle the lift empty a dozen times, check for drift, and re-torque anchors. The unglamorous part is the bleeding and the equalization — get either wrong and you’ll chase a lift that doesn’t lock evenly for months.
The first vehicle up was the daily driver, deliberately. We walked him through arm positioning on a car he knows well, showed him the manufacturer’s lift points, and had him raise it to about waist height and shake it before going any higher. That habit — the waist-height shake test — is the single most valuable thing we teach a new owner. He now does it every time without thinking about it. Drop-End Arms, Pad Height, and Low Collector Cars

Standard screw pads at their lowest setting were going to be marginal — meaning he’d have needed drive-on ramps or blocks every single time, which is exactly the kind of friction that makes people stop using a lift.
Drop-end arms solve this by lowering the pad seat closer to the floor at the arm tip. We added them on the front pair, and it turned a marginal fit into a non-issue. What We’d Do Differently, and What It Cost
Two things. First, we’d have run a dedicated 220V circuit to the column location during install rather than using an existing outlet across the bay with a cord run. It worked, but a permanent circuit is cleaner and safer, and doing it during install is cheaper than doing it after. Second, we’d have set the columns another foot apart. He’s at the manufacturer’s standard drive-thru width, and while it’s fine for cars, the wide-body truck is a careful squeeze.
