Why Brand History Matters More Than Spec Sheets
Every lift brochure looks the same. Capacity, rise, overall width, motor horsepower. What the brochure won’t tell you is whether the company that built it will still exist when you need a lock ladder or an equalizer cable in 2039. That’s the question that actually matters in a commercial shop, and it’s why we’re selective about what we sell. Rotary has been building lifts in Madison, Indiana since the 1920s — they patented the original inground automotive lift — and that continuity means a thirty-year-old SPO series unit still has a documented parts list. Challenger has been in Louisville since the late 1970s and has similar depth on the commercial side.
Contrast that with the churn in the import market. We regularly get calls from shops that bought a private-label lift from a catalog brand that no longer exists, and the answer is either a fabricated part, a cross-referenced generic cylinder, or a replacement lift. Real Dimensions for a Brake Bay
Let’s put numbers on it. A typical asymmetric 10,000 lb 2-post — think Rotary SPOA10 class — runs roughly 11 feet 4 inches overall width at the columns, with about 8 feet 2 inches of drive-through clearance between them. Column height is in the neighborhood of 11 feet 8 inches, which means you need a minimum 12-foot ceiling and preferably more if you have overhead doors, sprinkler heads, or ductwork in the bay. Maximum rise to the pad is generally around 70 to 74 inches, which puts a rotor face at comfortable chest height for a 5-foot-10 tech.
Bay spacing is where shops get it wrong. Manufacturers publish minimum bay widths, but minimum isn’t the same as workable. For a brake bay we want 14 to 15 feet of center-to-center spacing so a tech can roll a rotor cart, a torque wrench cart, and a parts bin alongside the vehicle without shuffling. Squeeze it to 12 feet and you’ve built friction into every job, permanently. Depth matters too: 25 feet minimum from the wall for a full-size pickup with the arms extended, plus room to open a tailgate. Brake Service and Rotor Swaps: What Slows Techs Down
Brake work is repetitive, high-volume, and unforgiving of bad ergonomics. A tech doing eight brake jobs a shift will feel every inch of wasted reach. Three things dominate throughput. First, arm geometry: modern vehicles with plastic rocker cladding and short pinch welds need swing arms with proper adapter stacks, and a lift with three-stage front arms handles both a Miata and a Super Duty without adapters that fall off. Second, rise: a lift that tops out at 60 inches forces a tech to work with arms overhead, and overhead work on a stubborn caliper bolt is where knuckles and productivity both get destroyed.
Third — and this is the one shops overlook — lock reliability. Techs subconsciously stop trusting a lift with sloppy locks and start setting it lower than they should, or they avoid that bay entirely. In the Urbandale shop we mentioned, the fix was replacing worn lock ladders and equalizer cables on two units and reallocating the low-rise scissors to tire and alignment prep work where their height was an asset. Same bay count, same techs, roughly a 20 percent improvement in brake-job cycle time. No new lifts required. The Parts Pipeline, Explained Honestly
Here’s how the parts side really works. Lift components fall into three buckets: wear items, hydraulic components, and structural. Wear items — equalizer cables, lock ladders, arm pins, slider blocks, rubber pads — get consumed on a predictable schedule in a high-cycle commercial bay. Hydraulic components — cylinders, seal kits, hoses, power unit pumps and motors — fail on a longer curve, usually five to fifteen years depending on fluid maintenance. Structural components rarely fail but are essentially unobtainable for orphan brands, which is why brand selection matters at purchase.
We stock wear items for the major brands and we cross-reference hydraulics aggressively. A cylinder is a cylinder: bore, stroke, port thread, mount style, and rod diameter. If we have those five measurements we can usually source a functional replacement even when the original part number is discontinued. Cables are similar — length, end fitting, and diameter get you a match. What we can’t fake is a proprietary carriage casting or a brand-specific lock mechanism. For a dealership running a busy autolift garage, our recommendation is simple: keep a shelf kit of cables, pads, and a seal kit for your two highest-cycle lifts. The cost is minor. Matching Lift Type to Dealership Work Mix
A dealership service department doesn’t do one kind of work, so a one-lift-type shop is always compromised. The mix we recommend for an eight-bay layout usually looks like this: four to five asymmetric 2-post lifts in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range for general service, brake, and suspension work; one 4-post for alignment or heavier trucks; one mid-rise scissor for tire, brake, and quick-service work where full rise isn’t needed and floor space is tight; and mobile column sets if you handle fleet vans or medium-duty.
Capacity deserves a hard look in 2024 and beyond. Electric vehicles have changed the arithmetic. A full-size electric pickup can exceed 9,000 pounds curb weight, which means a 10,000 lb lift is marginal and a 12,000 or 15,000 lb unit is the safer buy for a new install. Battery pack location also affects lift-point selection, and some manufacturers publish specific adapter requirements. We’ve retrofitted several central Iowa shops with higher-capacity units in the last few years for exactly this reason. If you’re planning bays now, spec for the vehicles you’ll service in ten years, not the ones on the lot today. Over-spec’ing capacity costs a modest premium at purchase and saves a full replacement cycle later. That’s the cheapest insurance in the whole autolift garage budget.
Preventive Maintenance That Keeps Bays Open
ALI recommends annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and for a commercial dealership shop we’d call that a floor, not a goal. Our service schedule for a high-cycle bay looks like this: daily visual check of cables and hoses by the tech, monthly lubrication of slider blocks and arm pins plus lock function test, quarterly cable tension verification and anchor torque check, and annual full inspection with hydraulic fluid analysis or change.
The failures we see are almost always maintenance-driven, not design-driven. Equalizer cables stretch and go slack, which makes carriages travel unevenly and puts side load on the columns. Dirty hydraulic fluid destroys pump internals and scores cylinder bores. Un-lubricated slider blocks gall and eventually chatter the carriage. Every one of those is a cheap fix caught early and an expensive one caught late. Building the Plan Before You Buy
The dealership managers who get the best outcomes treat lift procurement like any other capital project: measure first, spec second, buy third. Start with an inventory of what you have — brand, model, serial, capacity, install year, and current condition. That document alone answers half the questions. Then map your actual work mix by hours: how many brake jobs, how many alignments, how many heavy-truck jobs, how many EVs. The lift mix should mirror the work mix, not the other way around.
From there it’s logistics. Commercial installs need coordinated downtime, electrical work, possible concrete evaluation, and freight scheduling that doesn’t block your service drive. We phase installs bay by bay so a shop never loses more than one bay at a time, and we do the anchor drilling and hydraulic bleed after hours when it makes sense. Old lift removal and disposal is part of the conversation too — decommissioning an inground unit is a different project than unbolting a 2-post.
