Every fall we get the same call from Cedar Rapids: a European-marque specialty shop, or a private owner with a 911 and an E30, asking whether automotive two post lifts are the right way to park a car for five months of Iowa winter. It is one of the most common questions we field, and it is also the one wrapped in the most bad advice. Somebody on a forum said hanging a car by its frame all winter ruins the suspension. Somebody else said a two-post is the only civilized way to store a car because it keeps the tires off cold concrete. Both camps are partly wrong. We install and service lifts across Iowa every week, and we have seen what actually happens to stored vehicles — and what it does to trade-in and resale numbers when the car finally comes back out.

The myth that a two-post “hangs” a car and ruins the suspension

This is the one we hear most, and it comes from a real thing misunderstood. When a car sits on a two-post, the suspension is fully unloaded — the wheels droop to full extension and the springs sit at their longest travel. People assume that stretches the springs or damages the shocks. It does not. Coil springs do not fatigue from being unloaded; they fatigue from cycling under load. Shocks and struts are perfectly happy at full extension, and that is exactly the position they sit in every time a wheel drops into a pothole. Nothing in a modern passenger car’s suspension is harmed by five months of droop.

What can be affected is rubber. Control arm bushings, sway bar end links and especially the rubber in a strut mount will take a set if they sit twisted at full droop for a long period. On a well-maintained European car with fresh bushings, that set relaxes within a few hundred miles of driving. On a car with 140,000 miles and original bushings, it can turn a marginal bushing into a torn one. That is the honest version of the myth. Automotive two post lifts are not going to wreck a good suspension, but they will expose a tired one. If you are storing a car specifically to protect its value, this is worth knowing before you put it up in October.

What actually protects resale value during storage

The things that hurt a stored car’s trade-in value are boring: flat-spotted tires, corroded brake rotors, rodent damage to wiring, fuel system varnish, and a dead battery that took the ECU’s adaptive memory with it. Getting the wheels off the floor solves exactly one of those — flat spots — and it solves it completely. A car sitting on cold concrete for five months on modern low-profile tires will develop flat spots that never fully round out, and a buyer who feels a vibration at 65 mph on a test drive will knock real money off the offer or walk. That alone justifies a lot of what people spend on storage equipment.

The second thing lifting solves is rotor corrosion at the pad contact patch. Parking brake engaged, pads clamped, humid Iowa spring air — you get a rust ring exactly where the pad sat, and it is audible and felt for the life of those rotors. Wheels-up storage with the brakes released avoids it. A Cedar Rapids shop we work with started putting customer cars on lifts for winter specifically for this reason after eating two rotor replacements on stored cars. Everything else — rodents, fuel, battery — is handled with steel wool, a stabilizer, and a tender, not with a lift. Be honest about which problem you are solving.

Why automotive two post lifts are usually the wrong storage tool

Here is where we push back on our own product line. If your primary goal is storage, a two-post is generally the wrong choice, and we tell people that even when it costs us a sale. A two-post occupies the exact same floor footprint whether a car is on it or not, the columns eat wall space, and the vehicle underneath is trapped by the posts. You cannot open the doors of the car parked below without hitting a column. And the arms have to stay engaged the whole time, meaning that bay is out of commission for anything else.

A four-post storage lift does the same job with a drive-on runway, no arm placement to second-guess, and a car underneath that can actually be driven out. It parks on casters if you need to move it. For a 30×40 shop with 12-foot sidewalls — a very common Iowa build — a four-post storage model with a rolling jack gives you both the storage stack and the ability to lift a wheel when you need to. Where automotive two post lifts win is service access: exhaust, suspension, driveline, anything requiring the wheels to hang free. If you are doing real work on those stored cars over the winter, that changes the math entirely. Most people who call us about storage actually want both, and the right answer is often a four-post for parking and a two-post for the working bay.

Concrete, ceiling height and the constraints nobody measures first

The single most common reason a lift order gets delayed is concrete. Two-post columns concentrate enormous load into a small anchor pattern, and manufacturers specify minimums for a reason — typically 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI or better, cured, unreinforced-slab-acceptable but with no cracks or expansion joints running through the anchor field. We have had callers in Missouri and North Dakota tell us their slab is “about five inches, maybe less.” That “maybe less” is the whole ballgame. If you are not sure, core it or drill a test hole. Pouring a proper pad section is far cheaper than a column that walks.

Ceiling height is the other one. A clearfloor two-post with an overhead crossbar generally wants 12 feet or more. If you are at 10 or 11 feet, or you have a garage door track in the way, you are looking at a baseplate design where the hydraulic and equalization lines run across the floor in a low-profile channel. That is a completely legitimate configuration — we install plenty of them — but you need to know it before you order. One caller had a hard 139-inch maximum height and did not realize until late that his shortlist was all overhead models. For seasonal storage stacking specifically, remember you need the raised vehicle’s roof plus the parked vehicle’s height plus clearance, which usually pushes people toward a four-post anyway.

Capacity: why 10,000 lb is the honest floor

People with a 3,400 lb sports car ask us why they should not buy a 6,000 or 7,000 lb lift and save money. The answer is that capacity ratings are about the whole system’s margin, not just whether it will physically go up. A 10,000 lb model has heavier columns, thicker arm stock, larger cylinders and beefier cables than a 6,000 lb unit, and every one of those parts is working further from its limit. Over a fifteen-year service life that margin is what you are actually paying for. It also means the lift is still useful when you buy a truck, or when a friend’s SUV needs a wheel bearing.

The other capacity issue nobody thinks about is distribution. A two-post rating assumes a roughly balanced load — often 50/50 front to rear, sometimes 40/60 depending on the manufacturer. A mid-engine car, a van with a big rear load, or an EV with a floor-mounted battery pack does not distribute like a sedan, and EV pack weight changes lift point selection dramatically. For a European specialty shop in Cedar Rapids running everything from a Mini to a Cayenne, a 10,000 lb asymmetric with three-stage front arms handles almost all of it. Automotive two post lifts in the 12,000 to 15,000 lb range make sense once you are regularly seeing three-quarter-ton trucks or Sprinter vans, which most specialty shops are not.

Lift points, adapters and the damage that shows up at trade-in

Nothing destroys resale value faster on a European car than crushed pinch welds. Every appraiser knows to look, and a row of mangled seams tells them the car was lifted carelessly for years. On a BMW, Mercedes or Audi, the factory jacking points are reinforced pads or plastic pucks, and setting a bare steel lift pad against a bare pinch weld will fold it. Proper polyurethane pinch weld adapters — the slotted kind that cradle the seam rather than crush it — cost very little and prevent a defect that follows the car forever. We keep them in stock because we got tired of seeing the damage.

Height matters too. Many low cars need stackable adapters just to get the arms under the rocker without contacting the side skirt. Truck adapters, conversely, are needed to reach frame rails on lifted pickups. Buy the adapter set with the lift; buying it later always means one job done wrong in the meantime. And when a car is going up for months of storage, verify all four pads are seated and centered before you walk away, then walk around it once more at chest height. It takes ninety seconds. We also recommend leaving the safety locks engaged at a set height rather than resting the load on hydraulics — pressure bleeds down over months, and a slow settle can pull a pad off a pinch weld. Buying used, buying new, and what we tell Iowa callers

A lot of people ask about used equipment first, and we understand why. But a used two-post is only a bargain if you know its history. Cables and hydraulic hoses age out. Arm pins wear oval. Safety lock ladders get bent. Anchor bolts that were removed and reinstalled in the same holes never hold the way the original set did. If a used unit comes from a shop that closed and you can see maintenance records, that can be a genuine deal — we help people evaluate those. If it is a nameplate we cannot get parts for, we will tell you to walk away, because a lift you cannot buy a cylinder seal kit for is scrap with a paint job.
