Storage-first buyers have different priorities than shop-first buyers, and picking the wrong lift can leave you with a rig that either does not fit or does not lift what you actually own. Here is how we walk you through it.

Storage-First vs. Service-First: Two Different Lifts
The first thing we ask a home-garage buyer is whether the lift is primarily for storage or primarily for service. If the answer is storage — park a summer car up, park the daily under it — you can usually get by with a lighter-duty 7,000 to 9,000 lb rated drive-on with a shorter column and a narrower footprint. If the answer is service — you plan to actually work under vehicles regularly, do oil changes, brake jobs, and suspension work — you want a heavier-duty rig with rolling jack compatibility, taller columns, and better ratcheting locks.
Most first-time buyers say both. That is honest — you will store most of the time and service occasionally. In that case, the middle-capacity 9,000 to 10,000 lb rated home-garage car lift drive on is the sweet spot. It handles anything short of a heavy-duty three-quarter-ton truck for storage, and it will safely hold a passenger car overhead while you work under the daily driver below. Storage-first buyers can skip the rolling jacks; service-first buyers cannot. We would rather sell you the right lift for what you actually do than upsell you into a commercial-class rig you will never use to its rated ceiling.
Ceiling Height Math for a Two-Car Stack
Ceiling height is where more home-garage projects die than any other single dimension. To store one vehicle over another, you need enough vertical clearance for: the height of the vehicle below, the runway thickness of the lift, the height of the vehicle above, and a few inches of finger clearance at the top. Most sedans are around 58 inches tall. A pickup or SUV is 72 to 78 inches. Runway thickness on a drive-on is about 8 inches. That means a sedan-over-sedan stack needs about 130 inches, or roughly 11 feet.
A pickup-over-sedan stack needs closer to 12 feet, and pickup-over-pickup pushes 13 feet or more. Iowa pole building standard clear heights are usually 10 or 12 feet, so measure yours before you buy. If you have 10 feet clear, you are in trouble for a two-car stack unless both vehicles are low. If you have 12 feet clear, you have flexibility. If you built a 14-foot pole building, you can stack anything. A car lift drive on with an 8-inch shorter runway option exists in some models and can buy you a few inches, but do not count on it saving a marginal ceiling. Measure trusses to floor at the lowest point in your bay, subtract the taller of your two vehicles plus 82 inches, and you have your working answer.
Seasonal Storage: The Iowa Use Case

A summer Corvette, a project truck, or a motorcycle trailer sits from November through March and eats floor space that could be a workshop or a woodshop. Lifting it out of the way for five months a year turns a two-car garage into a three-car garage. The seasonal cycle also drives a maintenance point most first-time buyers do not think about: if a car sits on the lift for five months without being cycled, the hydraulic cylinder seals can take a set. Any car lift drive on should be cycled up and down at least once a month even during storage — raise the empty lift, lower it, then reraise it with the vehicle. That one-minute exercise keeps the cylinder rod polished and the seals lubricated. It also gives you a chance to spot leaks early. Neglecting the cycle can push seal wear from year twelve to year six.
Hydraulic Cylinder Seals and Rebuild Kits
Since we brought it up, let us go deeper on cylinder seals. The hydraulic cylinder on a drive-on lift is the single most stressed component. It holds vehicle weight against gravity through a rod seal, a piston seal, and a wiper seal. All three are consumables. On a home-garage lift running a few cycles a week, seal life is typically 10 to 15 years before you start seeing weep. On a lift that sits idle with weight on it for months, seal life drops.
Rebuild kits for most drive-on cylinders run in the low three-figure range and include all seals plus a wear band. Doing the rebuild yourself requires a bench vise, a cylinder end-cap wrench, and about two hours. Not hard if you have done hydraulic work before. If you have not, it is a service call — either us or a mobile hydraulic tech. The tell that you need seals: hydraulic oil drips at the top of the cylinder rod during a raise cycle, or the lift will not hold height overnight and settles a few inches by morning. Either symptom means schedule seals within the next few months. Do not ignore a slow settle — it will accelerate. A well-maintained home-garage car lift drive on will run cleanly for two decades. Only the seals and the cables should ever need scheduled replacement.
Slab, Anchors, and 220V Power
Iowa pole buildings typically pour a 4-inch slab with rebar or wire mesh. That is adequate for most home-garage drive-on lifts up to about 10,000 lb rated capacity. Above that, you want six inches. If you are building the pole building fresh, tell your concrete contractor you plan to install a lift and ask for six-inch pads at the column locations even if the rest of the slab is four inches. That upgrade is trivially cheap during the pour and expensive to retrofit later.
Anchor requirements vary by lift, but most home-garage drive-on models use 3/4-inch wedge anchors set to about 3.5 inches embed. The install kit ships with anchors sized for a fresh 4,000 PSI slab. If your slab is older or has surface cracks, we will spec epoxy anchors instead. Power is the other question every first-time buyer asks. Almost every drive-on in this class runs on single-phase 220V, not 110V. You need a dedicated circuit at 20 to 30 amps depending on the model. If your pole building was wired with only 110V outlets, you have an electrician job before the lift arrives. We tell buyers to run the 220V drop before we deliver so install day is not delayed. A quick call to an electrician is cheaper than a rescheduled crew.
What to Buy First: Ramps, Jack Trays, Drip Pans
The base car lift drive on ships with the columns, runways, cables, hoses, power unit, and standard approach ramps. That is enough to raise a vehicle. What most first-time buyers add within six months: a set of jack trays that bridge the runways for wheel-off service, drip pans that hang under each runway to catch oil changes, and either a set of rolling jacks or a bottle jack rated for the vehicle weight.
The jack trays are the most useful accessory for a home mechanic because they let you do brake jobs and suspension work without buying rolling jacks. They cost a fraction of what rolling jacks do and store on the runway when not in use. Drip pans are worth every dollar if you plan to do oil changes on the lift — dripping used oil onto a clean garage floor is a headache. If you are the kind of buyer who plans a project car build, you might also want a set of extended ramps for low-clearance vehicles. Standard ramps hit around 12 degrees; low-profile ramps drop that to seven. Add those accessories over time as you learn how you actually use the lift, not all at once. That is the pattern we see with successful first-time owners.
The Order-to-Install Timeline
From the day you place an order for a home-garage drive-on to the day it is running in your garage, plan for four to eight weeks. Lift build and freight is typically two to three weeks. Slab prep, if you are doing new concrete, is another two to four weeks depending on cure time. Electrical is a day or two. Install itself is one day for our crew, or two to three days for a DIY owner with a friend and an engine hoist to help stand the columns.

What you do not want is a lift arriving before the slab is ready — freight storage fees are real and a crated lift sitting in a driveway for two weeks is nobody’s happy story. A car lift drive on install day is the payoff, and by the time we leave, you should have raised and lowered the lift at least three times with your own vehicle on it, walked through the safety ladder engagement, and set a calendar reminder for the first 90-day cable inspection.
