A car lift in a farm shop lives a harder life than one in a dealership bay, and that changes what you should be checking before you spend a dime. We are based in Ames, Iowa, and a good share of our installs happen in machine sheds and pole buildings east of here toward Cedar Rapids, where the same building holds a grain cart, a welding table, a pickup, and a sedan that needs an alignment before spring planting. Those shops see dust, temperature swings, gravel tracked in on tires, and operators who are not turning wrenches for a living forty hours a week. Two components decide whether that equipment stays safe over twenty years of that abuse: the arm restraints and the safety-cam engagement. Why Arm Restraints Matter More in a Farm Shop

Arm restraints are the toothed gear-and-pin assemblies at the base of each swing arm that keep the arm from rotating out from under a vehicle once the pads make contact. On a two-post, they engage as the arms come up under load. In a commercial shop the technician sets pads the same way a hundred times a week and builds muscle memory. In a farm shop, the operator might use the equipment four times a year, and each time they are relearning the pad placement on a different vehicle — a half-ton one weekend, a compact car the next, a UTV trailer the weekend after that.

That inconsistency is exactly where restraints earn their keep. We have been called to shops near Cedar Rapids where an arm walked because the pad was set on a rocker pinch weld that had rusted thin, and the restraint gear was the only thing that kept the vehicle from sliding. We have also pulled apart restraints that had been packed solid with dust, chaff, and dried mud until the gear could not index. Before you buy, ask the seller to show you the restraint design: is it a spring-loaded gear that self-engages, or a manual pin the operator has to remember? Ask whether replacement gear kits are available separately, because on a farm car lift they will wear before almost anything else. And ask what the service interval is for cleaning them. A restraint you cannot inspect without dropping the arm is a restraint that will not get inspected.

Safety-Cam Engagement: Listen for the Clicks

Safety cams — the spring-loaded locks that drop into ladder notches in each column as the carriage rises — are your mechanical backup when hydraulics fail. That distinction matters. Hydraulics hold the load during operation; the cams hold it if a hose bursts, a cylinder seal blows, or a fitting weeps overnight. We got a call from a shop where a hydraulic cylinder was leaking with a car in the air and the owner could not get the vehicle down safely. In that situation, the cams are the difference between an expensive repair and a catastrophe.

On your pre-purchase checklist, put this line item at the top: how do the cams engage, and can the operator hear them? Good designs click audibly at every notch on the way up, and the operator’s habit should be to raise past the working height and lower onto the locks so the load rests on steel, not fluid. Ask whether the cams on the model you are considering release electrically, pneumatically, or by cable. Electric and air releases fail differently than mechanical ones, and in an unheated Iowa shed, an air line with moisture in it will freeze. We generally steer farm shops toward designs with simple, serviceable release linkages we can repair on site with parts on the truck. Ask, too, how equalization between columns is maintained — a car lift whose carriages drift out of sync will not seat both cams cleanly, and that is a problem you want caught during install, not two winters later.

Alignment Work Changes the Requirements

If alignment is on your list of jobs, the checklist gets longer. A standard two-post will let you inspect and adjust tie rods, but a real alignment needs a level, repeatable platform with slip plates up front and turn plates or a rear slip capability. That usually means a four-post alignment rack or a scissor alignment lift, not a general-purpose two-post. Plenty of farm shops split the difference: they run a two-post for service and send alignments to town. That is a legitimate answer, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a rack you use twice a year.

If you do want alignment capability in the building, be honest about the floor. Alignment demands a slab that is flat within tight tolerance across the whole runway length, and a lot of pole-building slabs were poured with a drainage slope toward the overhead door. We have shimmed four-post runways to correct that, and it works, but it adds install time and cost. Measure before you commit: pull a string or a laser across the intended footprint and note the high and low spots. Also check your ceiling. Alignment racks sit taller than you expect once a truck is on them and you want to walk around underneath. In a 12-foot sidewall pole building, a four-post alignment setup gets tight fast with a crew-cab pickup. We would rather run those numbers with you before ordering than after the freight truck is in your driveway.

Concrete, Anchors, and the Pole Building Problem

The single most common surprise we hit in farm shop installs is concrete. A two-post car lift transfers enormous overturning force into a handful of anchor bolts, and the manufacturer’s spec — commonly four inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete, often more for higher capacities, with minimum distance to any edge or control joint — is not a suggestion. Pole buildings frequently get four inches nominal, which means three and a half in the low spots, and control joints land exactly where you want a column.

Before you buy, core-test or at least drill a test hole and measure. If the slab is thin, the fix is a poured footing pad at each column location, typically cut in, doweled to the existing slab, and brought up to spec. It is not a hard job, but it is a job, and it needs to happen before the equipment arrives. We also look at where the columns land relative to the overhead door swing, the electrical panel, and the way you actually drive vehicles into the building. More than once we have moved a planned layout eight feet after walking a shop and realizing the owner backs a trailer through that exact lane every fall. While you are at it, plan power: most single-phase units want a dedicated 220V circuit, and in a lot of farm shops that means running new conduit from a panel that is already at capacity. Sorting the electrical during the pre-purchase phase keeps your install to one day instead of two trips.

Capacity, Vehicle Mix, and Not Overbuying

Most people ask us for more capacity than they need, and a few ask for far less. A 10,000 lb two-post handles nearly everything a farm shop will put on it — passenger cars, half-tons, three-quarter-tons, most SUVs. Step to 12,000 or 15,000 lb if you are regularly lifting one-tons, dually service trucks, or loaded work vehicles. Above that you are into heavy-duty territory and a different conversation entirely.

What matters more than the number on the plate is where the weight sits. A one-ton with a utility body and a welder mounted behind the cab has a rearward center of gravity that will make a lift feel wrong long before you approach rated capacity, and it puts uneven load on the arm restraints on one side. Tell us your actual vehicle mix, including the odd stuff — the 1970s pickup with a rusted frame, the low-clearance sports car that needs adapters, the van you use for parts runs. Adapter and extension needs drive arm configuration choice, and getting that wrong is annoying to fix later. On the storage side, if you also want to park a vehicle above another one during the off-season, a two-post is the wrong tool and a four-post is the right one. A car lift used for storage sees a completely different duty cycle — long static loads, cams engaged for months — and the checklist shifts toward runway construction, caster kits, and drip trays instead of arm restraints. The Inspection Habit That Keeps Everything Working

Buy the equipment with a maintenance plan already in mind, because farm shops are the worst offenders on this. The commercial shops we service in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids get annual inspections because their insurance and their liability exposure demand it. Private shop owners often go a decade without anyone looking at the cables, the cams, or the restraint gears.

Here is the short version of what we check and what you should check monthly: cables for broken strands or corrosion at the sheaves, equalization between columns, cam engagement at every notch, restraint gears free of debris and indexing fully, hydraulic lines for weeping at the fittings, anchor bolts for torque, arm pads for wear and correct height. Ten minutes with a flashlight. Write the date on the column with a paint pen. On overhead-style units, also check the equalizer cable tension and the overhead shutoff bar, because that bar is what saves your antenna and your windshield when someone forgets. If any of that turns up something you are not sure about, call before you use it. We would rather answer a phone question about a frayed cable than get called out to a shop where a car came down. Parts for a car lift are cheap relative to what they protect, and we stock cables, cam springs, restraint kits, and cylinder seals for the major brands so a repair is usually a same-week fix, not a six-week wait.

Your Pre-Purchase Checklist, Condensed

Print this and take it to the shop before you order. One: measure your slab thickness at each planned column location and note control joint positions. Two: measure ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, not at the peak — trusses, lights, and door tracks all count. Three: confirm available electrical and whether the panel has capacity for a dedicated circuit. Four: list every vehicle you will actually put on it, with the heaviest and the lowest called out. Five: decide honestly whether you need alignment capability or whether you will send those jobs to town.

Six: ask the seller specifically about arm restraint design, whether replacement gear kits are stocked, and how the restraints are inspected. Seven: ask how safety cams engage and release, whether engagement is audible, and what happens in a power or air failure. Eight: ask who installs it and who services it afterward, because a boxed unit dropped in your driveway by a freight carrier is not the same as an installed, tested, and certified setup. Nine: ask about lead time on wear parts. That last one separates good suppliers from catalog resellers.
