Start With the Building, Not the Brochure

Every good lift decision starts with a tape measure, not a spec sheet. We need three numbers before we can say anything useful: clear ceiling height (measure to the lowest obstruction — trusses, conduit, unit heaters, garage door tracks in the open position), bay width from wall to wall or column to column, and slab thickness with concrete age. In central Iowa we run into a lot of 1960s and 1970s shop buildings with 10 to 11 feet of clear height, which quietly eliminates most clearfloor two-post lifts and pushes you toward a baseplate model or a low-profile scissor.

Slab is where people get surprised. A standard two-post needs roughly four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and heavier-capacity units want more. We’ve cored plenty of Iowa shop floors that measured three and a quarter inches over gravel, which means a sawcut-and-pour footing before anything gets anchored. That’s not a deal-breaker, it’s just a line item you want to know about in advance instead of discovering it on install day. Also look at your drains, floor slope, and where the air and power already run. Choosing the right lift for your shop gets much easier once the building has told you what it will and won’t accept, and honestly, half the phone calls we take end with us ruling out two or three models in the first ten minutes purely on geometry.

Let Your Actual Work Mix Pick the Style

Write down the last fifty vehicles you serviced and what you did to them. That list, not brand loyalty, should choose the lift style. If you’re doing brakes, suspension, exhaust, and general repair on cars and half-ton trucks, a two-post asymmetric is still the best all-around tool in the trade — full wheels-free access, small footprint, and the arms swing out of the way when you need floor space. If you’re heavy into alignments, tires, and quick-lube style work, a four-post with rolling jacks or a dedicated alignment rack earns its keep faster.

Specialty work changes the math completely. Body shops that spend hours at door-sill height often get more done on a mid-rise scissor than on a tall two-post. Fleet shops with box trucks and duallies need to think about capacity and arm reach at the same time — a 12,000 lb lift with arms that won’t reach a long-wheelbase pickup’s frame points isn’t a 12,000 lb lift in practice. Capacity: Buy the Next Size Up

The single most common regret we hear is capacity. A shop buys a 9,000 lb unit because their current work is cars and light trucks, and three years later they’re turning away a 3/4-ton diesel dually with a service body because the numbers don’t work. Nobody has ever called us to complain that their lift was too strong. Going from 10,000 to 12,000 lb capacity is a modest cost increase relative to the total installed price, and it dramatically widens what you can accept.

Capacity also isn’t just the sticker number — it’s load distribution. Front-engine, front-wheel-drive cars put roughly 60 percent of their weight on the front pads; a loaded work truck can flip that. Adjustable-height arms, screw pads with stackable adapters, and correct symmetric versus asymmetric configuration all matter as much as the rating. We also remind shops that a lift rated for a given weight assumes the vehicle is centered and balanced, which is why long-wheelbase and heavy-rear-axle vehicles deserve a longer look at the manufacturer’s load chart. Brands That Are Actually Worth Owning

We service every major brand, so we have no reason to be diplomatic about this. For commercial shops that run a lift eight hours a day, we point people at Rotary and Challenger. Rotary’s two-post line — the SPO and SPOA families — has been the North American benchmark for decades, parts are everywhere, and the geometry is right. Challenger builds a genuinely strong commercial two-post and their PKS heavy-duty and four-post lines hold up in fleet and truck applications where lighter equipment gets tired.

For home garages, hobby shops, and light-duty use, BendPak and Atlas make solid, well-supported equipment at a price point that makes sense when the lift sees a few hours a week instead of forty. On the specialty side: tire equipment, we recommend Rotary. Brake lathes, Hunter Engineering. A/C service machines, RobinAir, Mahle, or Rotary. Vehicle safety guards and support stands, Rotary or Forward. That’s not brand snobbery, it’s twenty years of watching which parts we can still get in three days versus which units become paperweights when a proprietary cylinder fails. When you’re choosing the right lift for your shop, ask one question about any model you’re considering: can I still buy a cylinder, a cable set, and a lock ladder for this in ten years?

Total Installed Cost, Not Sticker Price

The number on the website is rarely the number you spend. Real budget for a commercial two-post includes freight to your door (or to a terminal, if you don’t have a dock and a forklift), rigging and setting, anchoring, concrete work if the slab is short, an electrical circuit run to the power unit, and often a compressed-air drop for the lock releases. On an inground lift you’re adding excavation, a containment or reservoir system, and plumbing. Those add-ons can run from a modest fraction of the lift price to more than the lift itself on a tough site.

We quote installed prices in tiers rather than exact figures because Iowa jobs vary that much — a clean pour-to-anchor install in a newer building is a very different day than a retrofit in a hundred-year-old brick garage with a floor drain right where a column wants to go. What we will tell you is that skipping the professional install to save money almost always costs more later. We’ve been called out to re-anchor, re-shim, and re-plumb enough DIY installs to say that with confidence. Ask for the all-in number up front, including a certified install and the ALI-required initial inspection, so you’re comparing apples to apples between vendors.

Layout, Bay Flow, and the Mistakes We See Most

Where the lift sits inside the building matters nearly as much as which lift you buy. Leave real working room: about three feet behind the vehicle for a transmission jack and a rolling cart, enough side clearance that a tech can get a door open with the arms extended, and a clear path from the overhead door to the lift that doesn’t require a fourteen-point turn. If you have two lifts, aim them so you’re not walking around a raised car to reach your toolbox.

The mistakes we see most often are predictable: mounting a two-post too close to a side wall so the driver’s door can’t open, running the power unit on the wrong side for the shop’s traffic flow, putting a clearfloor overhead beam under an existing unit heater, and forgetting about the garage door tracks that swing down into the exact space a car’s roof will occupy at full height. We also see shops buy an alignment rack without leaving room to open the hood or roll a wheel alignment head cart around all four corners.
