Most lift inspection checklists were written with above-ground 2-post and 4-post lifts in mind, where every moving part is visible. An inground lift inspection checklist has to account for a cylinder that’s sitting in a casing below grade, often with decades of groundwater exposure, soil movement, and old seals nobody has looked at directly. You can’t just glance at the piston and call it good.

We check the casing for signs of water intrusion, look at how the cylinder rises and settles under load, and pay close attention to any oil sheen on the shop floor near the lift, which is often the first visible sign of a seal or cylinder wall problem happening well below the surface. Cylinder and Casing Checks

We also check the casing itself for cracks or gaps that let groundwater or runoff reach the cylinder from outside.
Fluid level and clarity get checked next. Cloudy or milky hydraulic fluid usually means water has gotten into the system, which accelerates corrosion from the inside. We also run the lift through a full cycle while watching for hesitation, uneven rise, or a hollow sound that can indicate air trapped in the line or a cylinder that’s lost some of its seal integrity. Any of these findings gets documented with photos so shop owners have a clear record, and so we can track whether a condition is stable or getting worse between visits.
Hydraulic Line and Fitting Inspection
Hydraulic lines running from the power unit down into the cylinder are another spot we focus on heavily, because a slow leak in an underground line can go unnoticed for a long time. We check every accessible fitting for seepage, look at hose condition where it’s exposed, and check the power unit reservoir for fluid loss that doesn’t match normal operation.
We also test the relief valve and any check valves in the system, since a lift that’s slowly losing pressure can sometimes mask a line problem by just running the pump more often to compensate. That’s a pattern we watch for specifically, because it means the actual leak might not be obvious until fluid levels drop significantly. Locking Mechanism and Safety Devices

We check that locks engage cleanly at every height, test the release mechanism, and inspect arm restraints and pads for wear that could let a vehicle shift during service.
