What separates truck shop lifts from car lifts
Truck shop lifts are engineered around three realities that don’t apply to a car-only lift: heavier vehicle weight, longer wheelbase, and taller ride height. A 2-post that lifts a Camry easily will fold under a loaded 550, and a 9-foot arm won’t reach the frame points on a crew-cab dually without extension. The engineering starts with capacity, moves to reach, and ends with column height.
The other realities are ergonomic. Diesel techs spend more time under the vehicle than car techs do, so lift height matters more, and drive-through width matters because service trucks are wider than cars. Heavy 2-post lifts for pickups and 1-ton chassis
For shops that mostly see half-ton, three-quarter-ton, and 1-ton pickups, our default recommendation among truck shop lifts is a 12,000 to 15,000 lb 2-post. The 12K covers a loaded 3/4-ton diesel with headroom; the 15K adds margin for 1-ton flatbeds and duallies with tool boxes and fuel transfer tanks. Both come with tall columns (12-foot overhead) and extended-reach arm options.
The trap we watch out for: a customer specifies to the truck they own today and ignores the truck they’ll own in five years. If your fleet is trending heavier, buy heavier. 4-post drive-on lifts for full-length work trucks
For box trucks, longer-wheelbase work trucks, and any vehicle where drive-on convenience beats wheels-free access, a 12K or 14K 4-post is the tool. Our 4-post truck shop lifts have 18-foot to 22-foot runways, which is enough to land a Sprinter, a Transit, or an F-450 flatbed cleanly. We add a rolling bridge jack to convert to wheels-free when brakes or suspension work is needed.
The 4-post also wins for oil changes, transmission service, and any drivetrain work that benefits from a stable four-corner support. A shop we know in east-central Iowa runs their diesel service bay off a single 14K 4-post with a rolling jack and does more work per day than the neighboring shop with two 2-posts — the drive-on saves setup minutes on every vehicle.
Mobile column lifts for Class 6-8 trucks and equipment
When the trucks get bigger than a 1-ton, truck shop lifts move into a different world: mobile column sets. Each column is a self-powered, wireless-networked lift that clamps under a wheel, and you buy them in sets of 4, 6, or 8. Four columns handle a Class 6 straight truck; six columns handle a Class 7-8 tractor; eight columns handle a full articulated tractor-trailer or a big piece of ag equipment.
The advantage of mobile column lifts is flexibility — no anchoring, no dedicated bay, and the ability to lift almost anything with wheels. Concrete, ceiling, and power requirements
Truck shop lifts have real infrastructure requirements. Concrete: 4.25 inches minimum for 12K 2-posts, 5 to 6 inches for 15K-18K, and often 6+ inches for mobile column landing pads if you’re going to lift a Class 8 tractor. Ceiling height: 12 feet for standard overhead 2-posts, 13-14 feet if you want full rise on a heavy-truck 4-post. Power: 220V single-phase for most, 220V three-phase for the heaviest options.
We do a site walk-through before quoting anything over 12K capacity. Half the time the customer already has what they need and we can quote confidently. The other half we identify a fix — a saw-cut and pour-back for concrete, an overhead beam relocation for ceiling, or a subpanel upgrade for power — that we can coordinate with their electrician or concrete contractor.

A truck shop that loses a lift for a week loses real money.
